The man-cave is up
« on: 01 December 2019, 20:25:11 »

On Friday the local company finally came to put up the timber garage we ordered back in September. They were incredibly efficient and the four of them were gone before 3pm  :o.

I then spent the weekend kitting it out with electric, lights and a proper workbench, something I've been missing for a long while now. I also built a platform so that I can store all the cr@p from the main house over the top of the kit car during the renovations.

To say I'm happy with it is a massive understatement!  :y

Thanks chaps, I was contemplating a This week in Jimmy's workshop thread, but I fear my skills don't come close to Nick's, and making DIY bits for the house is likely to be far less interesting than his efforts.   ;D

Excellent.

What is your floor?

Currently its just the 6" concrete slab that the building went on. Its been so wet here of late that I want to give the concrete time to properly cure before I put any kind of surface down. Also, due to rain we had to put a plastic sheet over the concrete while it set and there are some marks in the surface as a result.

In the fullness of time I will probably put a high-build resin floor down to take up the imperfections.

Im not even slightly jealous of that. Not jealous at all. Why would I be ? Somewhere to have plenty of room to work on your car and have all your tools organised around the walls etc. Who needs that sort of thing anyway ?

also rain and snow is not available in a nice warm workshop ,though I guess you could rig a hosepipe to simulate the feeling of a river of cold rainwater running under your back as you work on your rusty Vauxhalls  ;D

Even being >1m away from the boundary, I think the neighbours are likely to complain if Eboy visits a wooden garage ... when the fences, hedges and trees are alight  :-X

I suppose I should feel a bit guilty.

I used to have a huge garage/workshop probably big enough for about 4 Omegas  :o (never tested this!).

I bricked about two thirds of it off for a sort of "music" (well drum kit) room   ::)  I now have very tiny garage (no workshop  :y ) possibly big enough for a Smart car. But in reality it's just full of junk.

Sadly the only change imminently is it being filled up with cr@p from the house. At this rate I'm  either going to need to employ a Feng Shui expert, or a divorce lawyer.  ::)

Updated the decor over the last week with the addition of one 'barn-find' kit car. As it's a non-runner I had to trailer it and backing the trailer up an unmade road on an incline made the Sh!troen sweat mightily. Still she's in now.

I also built a platform over the car to store all the cr@p from the house while we renovate.

Very nice Jimmy, although I am surprised you didn't put a pit in. When I had my current house built I told the builder to put a pit in. The next time I looked at the site he'd put in a solid slab. >:( >:( >:(
Annoyingly, a near neighbour who lived on site had one put in, yet the current owner born with no DIY skills never uses it. :-X

Thanks Shackeng.

Re. The pit, we don't plan to stay long when it's done so we wouldn't see much benefit on the outlay.

Tbh I'm also torn on put vs scissor lift. Given that I'm in my 30's I can't see me buying a 'home for life' any time soon. So having something I can pick up and take with me when we move definitely appeals.

Oo can you start a new thread on your kit car please? A thread to run some time as you do work on it.

Portable scissor lift sounds good if you are moving regularly.

Well there's no doubting which one of us will be finished first .. his arrived fully assembled ;D

Jimmy, I can vouch for having a scissor lift, though my advice would be to get the 'full height' lift version rather than the mobile 2/3 lift version. Mobile is subjective on something that weighs 500+Kg, it's only really "mobile" in that you can shove it a few feet around a billiard smooth floor - anything more than that and they are the same thing. In fact, if you have head height, just get a "portable" 2-post lift.

Mine inches toward completion:

Still nothing to attach the front end of those pipes to, though.

Wrong garage.

And besides, as it would have to come off the car insurance, then the car would have had to be insured...  ...which is difficult enough to remember of cars that I remember I have ;D
