Speedo and Rev counter fail
« on: 20 October 2014, 19:35:51 »

....all else is normal. Lights on. No blown bulbs. Temp and fuel gauge work. Indicators and idiot lights work, but no warning lights or anything untoward. Tc light comes on when the button is pressed, and goes off when pressed again.

Afaict, all is normal, except speedo and Rev counter needles are sat at zero regardless of speed and rpm.

Oh, and the speedo is vibrating at about a million beats a second within 1mm of zero mph.

Whyzatden...?

I have been thumping and pushing it back, in towards the connector. But it makes no odds.

Ime the lights/white bulbs are the first to flicker of it's not seated correctly, although that was a pfl cdx.

Worth reseating, but suspect its BF'd

What does at duff code reader say the rev counter/speedo is reading - if that figure is correct, then that proves the panel is BF'd. If it also says 0, then the implication is signal not getting through (which may or may not be panel - I'd suggest swapping with your other to prove).

Errr, think Kev did. So I doubt it. In fact he made all the connections in the Ecu box.  So no.

been here a long time ago….

if it's driven the same way as the mini facelift,   (and i believe it is )  then it's a component failure in instrument cluster…..   i forget what precisely…..   (it was some years ago)  think offhand it's basically a signal amplifier to drive the needles…  takes incoming sensor feed and ramps it up and smooths it out,  .  i found  it  impossible to find enough spec on it to make an informed replacement choice,  so ,  only practical solution was to replace the cluster…..      either  a used one (which screws with your mileage evidence )  OR,    which might still be possible,     do it properly ,  with a new one, ask your dealers….    and they weren't that eye watering ,  i think offhand they were about £150 …..

note that not "ANY" cluster will do,   it needs to be from the right model/engine as the speedos  are different….

(the ticking needle is a give away…..   its the sensor feed breaking through and triggering the needle…  )

Wiring diags show nowt more than Haynes, but confirm that fuse 12 is the one for the cluster :y

Any DBW V6 cluster will suffice, but saloon and estate fuel gauges read differently as the senders are calibrated according the body... saloon tanks being smaller :y

Not that it matters as yours never has petrol in it ;D

All fine this morning.

There is another thread in gen help that sounds similar, and mentions turning the ignition on and off repeatedly prior to the fault.

I didn't think it relevant, but the Bluetooth receiver I fitted last week was playing on the same journey. Kept dropping the connection. So I kept switching off the ignition at various convenient momment to restart the Bluetooth connection process.

I wonder if that's upset it?

Not so good on the way home. Symptoms returned after about the same time into the journey. :(

Pull the clocks out and inspect the back for cracks in the current tracks... issue might be obvious and readily repairable :-\

Yep, no chance of doing that before Sat though. Seeing as its Friday tomorrow though, it can wait. :)
