Audio input question...
« on: 21 November 2014, 13:21:02 »

Not technically an Omega issue, but might have relevance...

Car has a factory headunit, with a remote aux in and no blue tooth.

Have had poor experience of Parrot and don't get on with ear pieces/headphones.

If I connect the RCA amp audio outputs to the 3.5mm Aux input on the car using theses...

Will this then allow all the second head units functions... ie bluetooth phone/cd changer/dvd/dab etc to be heard through the factory head unit/speakers?

If so, Phone could then be surface mounted, with the head unit managing the in call audio... it would also mean that the second head unit could be plumbed in independently of the cars wiring, which simplifies things :y

And before you ask, factory headunit is fully integrated, with various components scatterbombed around the dash, so swapping it out isn't an option :'(

Should work fine, assuming its all Line Level out to Line Level in etc.

Volume Levels may not be perfect but shouldn't be too far out.

Nice one :y

I shall have a little play before burying a headunit in the centre console...

Actually Al, might be worth trying to find out what the i/p spec is or what its expecting to be plugged in to it on the OEM HU i/p, just in case it been modded to expect a low Impedance iPhone Headphone level out put or something.  :y

Since I'm too lazy to search, how have you got an aux-in? Very curious for the next arrival to the Gastro household...

where an aux-in is fitted to a Merc, it's in the glove box ...... assuming of course that Al is talking about his Merc  ;)

 :-X

But yes, Andy, the Merc has a USB socket and a dedicated aux serial input in the glove box, although this requires an adaptor depending on what you plug into it ::) also has Bluetooth audio which really simplifies the audio side of things :y

Car in question has a simple 3.5mm audio input, which I assume works... Time will tell :y

And to answer Zirks point, 4-8 ohms for the audio output of the headunit in mind...

That's probably because it was built by rednecks in Alabama ::)

Oh, I thought the plan was to use line output (RCA) of the 2nd Headunit into your Aux In, looking at the Cable pic posted.  :-\

Question really was what the I/P spec (Aux In) of your Merc HU.

You understood correctly :y Those were the only (vaguely) relevant specs I could find for the headunit...

As to your second question... it's not for the Merc as that has built in bluetooth and a nice 7" colour screen with dvd changer from the factory 8)

Problem is, although everything I might wish to add to the car in question is readily available as factory order, unless it's factory prepared (which it isn't ::)), all the wiring is missing. And as a side effect of cluster bombing the car with ecms, each one is  permanently chassis coded ::) so retro fitting second hand factory items is impossible as nothing will work :'(

Depending on head units you are playing about with

Most OEM head units use a 300 ~ 500 mV input for the aux in

Most older head units (10 years+) are 300 ~ 500 mV RCA output

Most newer head units (5 years to present) are often 2 ~ 4 Volt RCA output

You might want to look for an in line RCA attenuator to drop the voltages - not that expensive  :y

Either a Sony Mex R1 or Xav 72BT into a 2010 Volvo V70 S...

The Xav unit only really viable if the screen can be made remote, I guess by extending the connecting ribbon :-\
