Button ID Parade
« on: 04 September 2006, 14:49:39 »

Hi Guys.

I have some buttons in my car, and I have NO idea what they do. (No Owners manual, as it's EX PLOD)

First one is an Upside down sunset, it on the main bank of buttons next to the Hazrad light switch.
If I push it, it goes "click" and the orange light comes on but nothing seems to happen....(Possibly blows up a small house in China)

Second one is a Snow flake symobol on the left of the Auto Shifter, when I push it, the car is VERY sluggish, like it's trying to pull away in 4th..  :o

Any thoughts.

Cheers.

Matt

Can't answer your first question but you've answered the 2nd question yourself (almost). It sets you off in 3rd gear to help prevent wheel spin in snow - hence the snow flake!  ;)

D'oh beaten to it!  :(

Snoflake is winter mode for the auto trans.  Car starts off in third gear when activated.  It is used for icy conditions although how effective it is I do not know...

To activate, press the snowflake button and it lights up (dark red I think).  Would not use too often though as I am sure it cannot do the auto box much starting off in third all the time.

Upside down sunset does not sound fimilar - it could be for some additional interior lighting that the plod had fitted???

Will check out my manual when I get home and have a look for you.

Cheers guys,

That would explain why it really lame when pulling away with the Snowflake engauged...
The upside down sunset it very odd. There is a horizontal line, which has attached to it, and semicircle, with little lines comming from it....

Cheers.

Upside-down sunset button is ex-plod only, and I seem to remember someone saying that it is for the internal lights at the back. But you wouldn't find it in the owner's manual even if you had one...

On Marks DTM's it seemed to be wired into the relays for the blues and twos

Not sure what this actually does on the plod car, as I said I read on the 'other' site that this was for internal lights, but whatever it is for keep in mind it may relate to a feature that has been removed when the car was de-ploded - e.g. blue lights etc.

As has been said the snowflake button locks the box up in third, and is quite effective in slippery conditions, it also automatically disingages at 30 mph. I seem to remember a thread on the "other side"relating to the sunset button, I think it's for overiding the switches on the doors that energise the interior lights, so that plod will not draw attention to themselfs when sneaking up on felons at night. push the button open the door and see what happens let us know if I'm right.

Howdoo.  Been a tad busy over the past couple of days...

Your upside down sunset button is generally for the inside lights.  Sometimes wired to put ALL internals on - both of the rears, the front, and sometimes an additional one is fitted in the centre of the roof.

Can sometimes also be wired to work as an opposite, i.e. to stop the internal lights coming on if you open a door.  Normally only on 'specialist' unmarked cars and when used on an 'obs' job and someone perhaps has to get out on a foot follow and the light coming on would show out.

Also heard of it being for hidden blues (such as Marks) but normally now, given health and safety requirements, a set of fully marked, independant switches is required to operate the array of christmas tree lights thats available.

I would lay odds on switching on the internal lights.

Cool,

Thanks for that.
I'll test out the interior light theory later today... :)
I did wonder why there was no interior lights when I open the door.

Cheers.
