Spanner vs emmisions light
« on: 23 February 2017, 20:37:27 »

Hi am i right in saying that anything emmisions related would bring on the engine light which could be read and reset with my obd maxiscan tool and anything else faulty would bring on the spanner light.again which could be read and reset with said tool.after sorting the precat codes which are obviously emmisions related i once got a gearbox code for the prnd switch which i cured with cleaning it. Is this classed as emmision related? So what codes cause which light to come on?.mines a 2.6 .also can my brothers 2.5 be checked with same code reader. No faults to report on it ,10 monitors n/a ,no issues but spanner light never illuminates, even with know working. Bulb  in. Is this normal ?

So looking at some youtube videos the pedal trick makes the spanner light flash out the code and another video shows the emmisions light to flash the code with the paperclip method.

2.5's don't have an emissions light.

And 2.5 is not EOBD compliant, so more chance of pulling your foreskin over your head to keep your ears warm than a cheap generic OBDII reader working on it.

Ah .that may make sense then. I thought the engine light was the emmisions light. My brothers 2.5 only has that one but no spanner light. My 2.6 has both. I always thought the spanner light was the eml for non emmision stuff and the engine one for emmision stuff. Cheers

Indeed, with the 2.5, the engine light means anything related to engine.  Not that the 2.5/3.0 really have any scope for emissions related warnings, like misfire detection and cat efficiency.

So if /as/when he ever has an eml how do you reset it. With the code reader as on my 2.6 or battery disconnect.

With a non generic reader, such as the Snapoff range (£400 upwards), GM Tech2 (£3k) etc, or pay a garage who has one ;)

For 2.5, light usually goes out when you've fixed it
