Bank holiday
« on: 23 February 2020, 21:19:30 »

I see for this year they are moving the May bank holiday from its traditional Monday to Friday[the 8th] to coincide with and commemorate the 75th anniversary of V-E Day.I wonder will they do something similar in August for V-J Day and the end of WWII?

Only in Britain. Any other country would have both the 1st and the 8th as holidays.

Every day in Spain is a Fiesta for something, and the French are off pretty much every other day as well.

The Brits, Yanks and Chinks*, are the only people who actually seem to do any work.

*To be fair, the Bangladeshis are also quite busy looking after the Arabs if only because the Arabs need to spend it on something and the Bangladeshis need the cash. The Chinese aren't quite as busy as normal because, in true communist fashion, they ALL have a cold... For the greater good of course.

True and false.

The Spanish do have lots of fiestas. Quite right . Life should be about people i.e. working to live not living to work which seems to be the case in the US and Britain.

If you do some research you will find that the Spanish work longer hours than quite a few other European countries including the UK. It is very much a false stereotype. The government introduced measures that obliged companies to monitor staff working hours ( e.g. clocking in and out whenever  entering/ leaving work) as there is a national culture of working unpaid hours due to fear. The last crisis hit Spain very badly jobwise..

No, it was more than that and more recent. Employees had to clock in or out whenever they left the building including smoking breaks. There was an historic case recently where smokers had time docked for those breaks. Caused a furore. I thought the ruling was quite fair . When I worked in the Uk we had to answer the phones of absent smokers while they relaxed outside!

There is a lot to be said for the attitude of countries like Spain, Greece etc.  where enjoying life is more important than working every available hour. That's why we go on holidays there, to sample a couple of weeks of their great sunshine, food and laidback lifestyle.
However, the problem that has arisen in recent times (thanks to the EU) is that it seems they have come to believe that they also have a right to be as affluent as countries like the UK where peoples life balance tends to be much more weighted towards work.
Hence the UK and Germany subsidising the other member states.
They have all started fighting like cats in a sack now, because the EU wants everyone to up their contributions to make up the shortfall brought about by Brexit.
A few of the more sensible member states are digging their heels in and saying the EU needs to use its funds efficiently rather than just increasing budget contributions again.

Remind me of when the last EU budget was actually passed by all members.  ;D

When I worked for the council we had a lot of guys who used to cycle in to work , clock in and then have a leisurely shower , get changed and then start work , that soon stopped when management twigged just how much time was being lost , when people had to shower and change in their own time , the cycling seemed to drop off a bit  ;D

Watching local TV , there was an item on areas receiving money from EU cohesion fund. Northern Portugal got the most followed by Andalucia. I can believe the latter as you see the signs everywhere saying built/ done with EU money. Unsurprisingly you never hear a Spaniard anti EU though they do have concerns about some of the EU politics like immigration ( Spain has by far the biggest number of asylum seekers of any EU country due mostLy to the Venezuelan crisis)

This subsidising poorer areas is only like the South East of UK bailing out the North East. The argument would be why not rich North Europeans subsidising poorer areas of the EU?

Your right. If a member state wishes to remain within the political union, then there is a good argument for wealthier member states subsidising poorer ones, just as the south of England subsidises the rest of the UK.
The big problem of course, is the fact that no one in any of the member states has ever been asked if they wished to cease to be self governing sovereign nation states, and become a member state of a political union instead.
Imo, that is why it will never work or survive in the long term.
