As a temporary fix, if you pop the trim pieces off around the selector you can manually move the linkage (same way as pressing the button) I think.

Its unlikely to be wasted effort as the trim comes off to replace the shifter anyway.  :y

Thanks Jimmy. Yes I was going to have a look in the manual later to work out how to get at the over ride, because as I can't get it into P, I can't remove the key.  ::)

It seems like a common problem though and there are repair kits for the button. Alternatively, I might go to the scrappy and get another knob, as that looks easy to remove.  :y

Don't think I'll have to replace the shifter... Hopefully!  ::)  :)

Manged to pull my knob off, played with the rod underneath and got it into park, so I could take the key out and lock it and I think that by manipulating the rod I will be able to drive the car OK.  :y

I now need to decide whether to repair my knob or replace it with a used one.  :P

Broke the V70.  :(

The button on the gear knob broke and fell out, and I can only use D and N.  ::)

It happened just as I was about to set off for Dorset from South Wales and I was in a cul de sac facing the wrong way!  ::)  I managed to turn around by going up on the pavements, which was lucky as the V70 has a crap turning circle.  Once I was pointed in the right direction, I didn't stop until I got home!  ;D
Being a bit of a lad, one of the crappier vans they gave me back in the day - a really shagged 2l petrol transit - I always used to think it was really funny every lunchtime to race into the (tiny, tight) carpark where a few of us used to meet for lunch, slam it in reverse whilst still going forward at a rate of knots, and effectively do a handbrake turn so it was facing the right way to leave.  If the handbrake worked, I would have used that instead.

Needless to say, after a few weeks of this, reverse gear just became another neutral.

Rather than yet another driver misuse form, and as I knew it was due for replacement, I just drove around everywhere not using reverse for about the next month :P

Dropping them into second at speed and dumping the clutch was a pretty spectacular way to slow down as well :-X

I put a 1.8 Belmont into 1st at about 90mph once. That stopped quite quickly as well.

A mate of mine did 4th - reverse in a Morris Ital, forgetting that there wasn't a fifth gear.
Apparently that stopped fairly quickly, but not as quickly as the banjo axle and pair of leaf springs it left behind. :D

Had a play with the gearshift (minus knob) and discovered that it's stuck in Park.  :(

So it's a trip to the scrappy tomorrow morning.  ::)
