Omega General Help / Re: fuel consumption test, inc air con
« on: 02 November 2012, 08:56:46 »
Might be able to contribute something interesting to this as I've been doing a series of consumption tests as bits have broken and been replaced.

2.5V6 manual estate. 2 passengers no load 137K. This might reveal more to those of you who know more than me but here goes.
The range is tested from a good representation of the proportions for combined cycle at the lower end to long distances at about 75mph for the upper end. Tyres all inflated to figures off the forum. Engine serviced including air filter at 134K. 600 miles or so in each of the stages.

Standard factory trim. 27.2-29.7mpg and a pig to stop stalling with a gentle take off (normal for me).
Long intake pipe removed from behind o/s/f headlamp. No longer a stall fest.
Throttle bodies cleaned and K&N panel filter fitted and the averages don't change enough to notice but the throttle response is a frac better possibly.

Diesel diff fitted 28.5-31.6mpg.
M tech chip fitted 30.4-33.8mpg and throttle response and acceleratiion is back to standard spec/diff levels. It's also developed a really nice V6 rasp if you give it some beans.

All the figures are from the same pump at the same station brim to brim (literally).

As a comparison my 3.0V6 4WD auto x type Jag in factory spec does 26.1-31.7 under identical conditions.

Make of that what you will.

Omega General Help / Re: 2.5 V6 estate rear suspension

There's no self levelling which I'm very happy about. When I next get it on the ramp I'll look again at the bushes. From past experience I'm cautious about lowering springs unless the dampers are shortened as well as often with a bit of additional load, the dampers are at the limit of their operating length. Back burner for this one though as I discovered yesterday that the aircon has given up. Don't know if it's relay, switch or pump yet although I know it's not a refrigerant issue. Only way to stop it misting up at the mo is to turn the system off and open the windows just like you used to do 40 years ago.

Thanks for the suggestions. I look into both a bit more.

Omega General Help / 2.5 V6 estate rear suspension

My wife and daughter get travel sick when in the back of the car owing to its wallowy nature (and my need for enjoyment whilst driving). Any suggestions for firming up the rear springs and/or dampers. Both springs and dampers are currently fine although have done 137K.

It'll never tow as I removed the factory tow bar and its very very unlikely to be loaded anywhere near the rear axle payload. I don't want a silly drop nor a bone shaking ride. I've looked at changing to MV6 spec but drawn a blank but have also thought about saloon spec. Basically something firmer and possibly 10-20mm lower is the idea.

What would you suggest?

Thanks

Anthony

Omega General Help / Re: Wheel alignment/steering geometry

I had mine done by a place recommended on a WIM website link. I also corresponded with WIM to get the right settings for mine and it worked a treat. The figures and technique aren't obvious so I'd suggest going down that route. I double checked with the man who did mine as to whether he'd done any Omegas before. his comforting reply was "too many".

Thanks

Have found the guide on the old forum now. That's a lot clearer.

It now refuses to start at all. New crank sensor on order from vauxhall. Couple of quick questions. Is it easier to feed the sensor down from above or the socket up from underneath as it all disappears into a black hole through the exhaust manifold.

Secondly which is the multi plug it goes into?

Thanks

Thanks very much. I've read the bit about late 2.5s so I'll have a grub around underneath to make sure I get the right one or is it reliable to do it by engine no./VIN

My first post with a problem I've not seen an obvious answer to. The title says it all really. It's fine 99% of the time but now and again it turns over and just won't fire. No EML flashing, only code 31 when read off. No codes to read off when it does start.

Reading through stuff suggests crank sensor but I don't believe in changing things without proper evidence unless that's just the way it is with this fault.

Any other ideas gratefully received.

I've been popping back and forth here since buying my omega last April. Now it's started to misbehave a bit I thought it was a good idea to join to share ideas.

I have a very late 2.5 V6 manual estate with 136K which cost me less than the scrap value of the P38 Range Rover I had before it. I've replaced the diff with a diesel one which has improved the fuel consumption and will pop an M tec chip in it to recover the performance such as it is.

It's a mouldy old thing both figuratively and in reality but all the family love it. I'm sure it lived under trees and near water for a lot of its life but little by little I'm making it look half decent.

My daughter calls it Herman the Sherman as it's a bit of an old tank. We did have a good laugh at the irony.
