Tunnie,

It sounds to me like the battery is shot TBH.  Earlier on you mention about the cooling fan not cutting in.  Is  this working now??

Like others on here, I am extremly interested in how you tackle the rust and any pictures you can provide of "work in progress" would be great.

I have to say that I agree with Ronnie on the possible sale price.  I have a 1998 2.5 CDX with leather and the electric pack (meaning memory seats, heated rear seat and auto dipping rear mirror).  I paid, too much at just under £1500.  This was a one owner car with full history.  A few months later went to sell (on e-bay admittidly) and the highest bid was £740.  Off of e-bay the higest bidder then offered £800 as my reserve of £1000 was not met.  Whilst I was not out to make a profit, there was no way I was going to take a £700 loss so kept it.

Not trying to put you off at all but that was how I found things.

As said earlier, I wish you all the best with it.  Keep us updated with progress!

i am kinda hoping its the alternator now as it will be free to fix!  :)

Going to do what TaxiDriver suggested and do a few multimeter tests with the engine running. I only have a basic multireader, and tbh have no idea which mode to set it on!

I had it on 9v (which is designed to test those square 9v batterys) and it barely read 2 volts, not tested it with the engine running yet.

As x25xe says does sound like the battery,  but worth checking the alternator as well.

Your meter needs to be set on dc, and then something around 20v or even 30v....if your still not sure if you post a pic of your meter then we should be able to advise where to set the switches on it.

This is my multimeter, for DC settings ranges from 0.5 to 500. I am guessing set it either on 10 or 50 in theDCV bracket?

If in doubt with a meter always start on the highest range and work down till you get a reading. :)

It would start if i swap the battery as the one in my facelift is fully charged, but it would not tell me if its the alternator thats faulty.

At the moment i used a RoadStart unit, plug on the clips to positive and negative and it starts first time, it would do the same with a working battery, but i need to find out wether the alternator is charging the battery propperly

cheers, i'll get my mum to rev it.... me being dim again, if its set to 50, the middle set of numbers on DCV.A will be the reading? Cause there are 3 differnt ranges 0-10, 0-50, 0-250

I still plan to get my mum driving project A by the end of the day, she is still scared of driving autos!

She is a fully quailified barrister and can do maths quadratic equasions as long as my arm.... but show her a car with an auto box and she runs away!  [smiley=lolk.gif]

Quadratic equations are easy, partial integration, now thats a different story!

You can rev it yourself with the bonnet open, just press the throttle valve arm where the accelerator cable attaches to it (front left of the bit with ecotec written on it!)

its got a throttel cable, you can rev from under bonnet!

If its on 50v setting, it will be 0 - 50 scale.

A decent meter should be added to your tool list - a reasonable digital meter will cost £5 (we don't really need Fluke type accuracy and calibration for this type of stuff)

oh yeh, duhh fogot about the cable throttle control...

Got my mum to drive Project A today, she loved it!! Told her it was easy.... she usually drives a 1.6 Almera Ambition.

So the 2.5 V6 Omega felt a bit "differnt" in her words, when she wasn't looking I pressed the S button  ;D
