ran  out of petrol now wont start (2.5 v6 cdx)
« on: 13 August 2007, 16:38:09 »

have had my car for about 4 months and had no problems. it ran out of petrol on sunday and i put 15 litres in and some red ex. now there is a warning light on. it is a picture of an engine with a spark through it. it keeps stalling even when driving. its an automatic. when it stalls i still have power steering untill it rolls to a stop then nothing. when i try to restart it, it just turns over but eventualy just picks up but then within a few hundered metres stalls again. any help would be apreciated thanks.

Sounds like a crankshaft sensor failure or possibly an immobilizer fail

Due to the running out of fuel, I would also get a new fuel filter and fit it.  Running problem could be a lack of fuel supply caused by a blocked filter.  This would cause a lack of fuel pressure which may trigger the EML.  Could also be a fouled plug causing poor sparking which may also trigger the EML.  This is just a theory.

Symptoms are like a crank sensor, but I have read in the past that when they die no amount of cranking will get it started again until the engine has cooled down.  Have you have starting issues in the past?  By this I mean has the engine taken a long time to start?

Have you tried to paperclip test it to see what codes can be seen if only to confirm the crank sensor that has already been mentioned.

the situation you tell give me the idea of fuel air mixture problem.Either too much air or less amount of fuel can cause this.Whats the mileage of car? What are the codes from the ECU ?

PS: Together crank sensor problem I dont think you can rev high

I wonder if the Idle Control valve is sticking? its an auto so when you ran out of fuel it could well have wound fully open to try to keep the rpm up.
Its easy to check, remove it and flush the valve with WD40 or carb cleaner then add a little light oil and refit.

thanks for all your answers
just an update I have had the fuel filter changed and it still wouldn’t run so I got a mobile mechanic to run a diagnostics and it said that the mass air flow meter problem. I asked Autosuplies and they quoted me £220! so I got one from a local vehicle dismantlers and he assured me that it was from my car but the plug is different. so I need to find one. any ideas people?
cheers

The general concensus on here is that MAFs very rarely go wrong and that this fault code can be caused by many other problems, specifically air leaks, leaky EGR valves and the like. I certainly wouldn't fork out that sort of money without more investigation. Apparently MAFs can be cleaned with computer foam cleaner too.
