Interior blower fan running constantly.
« on: 09 June 2018, 22:00:07 »

Well after a downpour of absolutely biblical proportions I find that I've fallen victim of a blocked drain in the fan chamber resulting in the interior fan blower motor running constantly and not bein able to be switched off ,even when the ign. key is removed.. >:(
Classic symptoms of wet footwell on passenger side and three or four inches of water in the chamber.
I've cleared it ( door , horse , bolted ..... :-[ ) but the damage is done.
I've blown the chamber dry using compressed air ,detached the two connectors in the footwell and dried them , the floor and carpet has also been wet vacuumed . I've removed each and every relay in turn in the compartment next to the battery but still the fan runs . My car is an early FL but the Haynes manual is for the PFL with AC not CC . I've pulled fuse 14 under the steering column which according to the VX manual is the one relevent to the CC but still the bloody thing runs .....
The relays under the column are clearly marked and none are related to the CC or blower fan.
So gentlemen , what's the diagnosis ?
Is there a blower fan relay and if so where . Is there a resister pack for the fan that is possibly the culprit or is it the CC control module ? or is there a simple ,three second repair that a six year old could do ... :'(
I'm really pissed at this as I knew of this problem and thought I had cleared the drain when I fitted a new pollen filter . I had ,except that I replaced the filter in 2010 .

Pop the negative off the battery as a start. Then unplug the hedgehog.

New hedgehog should sort it ;)

Incidentally Haynes does cover CC... iirc, it's the right hand half of the AC diagram, but the print is very small and it's all in German ;D

Where is the hedgehog DG .

Edit .
I see in the manual it's attached to the blower fan with "how to " instructions .

It's the heater blower resistor...
Up behind the glovebox ;)

There should be a guide for attacking it ;)

Don,Similar symptoms to mine if you look in electrical problems.

Hedgehog is up under the glove box tucked into a recess and held in place by plastic tangs on the outer section.

Its a pita to get to as you will need to remove the glovebox, also easier if you get you head on the passnger footwell and lok up towards the back.Decent torch is required and its also easier with the lower vacuum solenoid pulled out the way..its held inplace by a single T15 screw.

3 connections ..single thick brown wire/single thick red wire /then small plug with several wires but comes off as 1.

I found it easier on refitting putting the brown and red wires inplace then manipulating the actual hedgehog module into the recess and pushing until the tangs clipped in place, although you may need to fold/force them away from the sides first.

Took me around 1.5 hours this afternoon to remove and refit new one.Got mine off Amazon for £18 with bit of postage as wanted it next day.

Solved the fan problem and works fine now so they must go "open circuit" and give a constant live feed

I am sure that I took out a fuse when I had this problem. Be very careful taking out the hedgehog I broke the retaining clips on mine and then there is no way of holding it in except for a piece of wood jambed under it. It was very cold when I did mine so clips were quite rigid. That was a previous car and now I check the scuttle drain on a very frequent frequency.

Yes the 2 plastic retaining tangs are quite fiddly..I found gentle pressure outwards on the edge with the 2 wires and then quickly onto the other edge pushing whilst rocking the module from edge to edge that way the natural spring in the tang was held.

Could see anyway of getting a hand on each side and still being able to pull the module free.
