Just another step towards autonomous vehicles.Meanwhile it must surely take marques such as Bugatti,Lamboughini,Ferrari etc at least close to if not over the edge?Get ready to stock up on your Ford Sts VXRs etc.as surely there'll be no point paying extra for the "fast" one of the range if it won't go any faster than the bog basic slug of the range?

I have been saying this is the future for years now.

Enjoy it now while you can. Speed, vicious acceleration and braking and cornering, crossing the white line to straighten corners will all be a thing of the past. Thrills will be got at theme parks or online. I also predict charging for how you drive, when and how many in the vehicle. Mind you I also predict preparing meals at home will be a thing of the past with meal bars instead being dispensed from a machine based on your work output, weight etc.

Similarly, hasn't Japan had a limit on max speed for ages Besides unofficially everything is limited to a Vmax of 155mph already.

Most road fatalities are caused by stupidity rather than speed. Driving at 150 an empty motorway is inherently safer than parking in the same place as Terry's sister or my Nan

Yup,, its already been said it will be a switchable system, that can also be overridden by acceleration.

The intention must surely be to make it non switchable in future generations. Otherwise its a pointless gimmick.
It may even be planned to have the vehicle linked to a database which automatically prosecutes the driver.
Its all perfectly possible, they just need to soften us up for acceptance first.

Yup,, its already been said it will be a switchable system, that can also be overridden by acceleration.

Its based on standard ADAS forward facing cameras.

If you chose to turn it on (with current vehicles), it 'limits' your speed on the assumption that it has correctly read the speed limit sign OR the satnav database is up to date.....if you floor it you get a ping and it exceeds the limit. Reality is that the limits change and the satnav is not updated plus speed signs, if dirty or obscured, don't get read!

I expect the change will be for the system to default to on and need turning off at every ignition cycle (as per the legislation that pushes stop/start that way)....then maybe on with no off option

Also it's not just a speed limiter they're on about,there's the "boozelock"[that could be a good thing]and the system will also decide whether you're drowsy or not paying enough attention-don't know what happens if you're on the motorway and it figures you're too tired to drive? and also a "black box"operating on similar principles to those fitted in aircraft-but who's to say it's only recording/storing info and not downloading it somewhere?
