Dog grooming
« on: 22 July 2019, 11:17:54 »

Have any brave souls on here tried clipping their dog? I'm fed up with her coming back looking different every time, traumatised and dehydrated after three hours in a sweatshop full of noisy dogs and the radio blaring.
Pet groomers these days seem very choosy (westies are fidgety and hard to get right) and want to cut the dog the way they think it should be done, not the way you want it.
Anyway...I'm going to order some clippers and scissors and have a go myself.

How hard can it be?  :o    ;D ;D

There are some really good ones and some really shit ones.

It really does pay to shop around and it's as much about the dog being happy as you are  :y

You don't find out they're shit until it's too late, though. I reckon a decent pair of clippers, with combs, and a set of scissors will cost me about £150. I'll have saved that after five grooms.

That seems a lot. Lidl have a decent set for £30. Wahl  multi cut. Does the job but we still drop him off at pet groomers £25 and anal glands expressed too.

Anal glands should only be expressed by a vet, if necessary. They are supposed to work each time a dog has a poo, and will stop working correctly if 'forced' every time the dog is groomed.

Oops, quite right. Only happened once and that was near Leicester. Mrs V says we pay 25 euros here and no glands.

Makes you wonder what they do with it. Pie flavouring or maybe crisps.

Sorted. A nice young lady called Laura returned my call from this morning. Poppy is booked in for next Wednesday, should be about an hour and one dog at a time in an air conditioned garage.
I am happy  :)

I will go and pay the groomer up the road for the appointment we are are going to miss tomorrow. Fair's fair, it's very short notice.

years back we sent our spaniel for clipping,
he came back with feathers and with long ears,
exactly the things we wanted rid of,

bought a set of Walle clippers and do all the dogs once or twice a year,
learn how to clean the clippers its the secret to them cutting,
also make sure the guard wont slip off half way or you scalp the dog

I use something like this  wahl clicky on ME  ;D

I shop fitted a Barber's a few years back and have free cuts for life ,but it's a 30 mile round trip and a faf ,so I just whizz it off when needed with a set like the link, the combs space the length out ,so choose the correct one and you won't end up with a bald dog  :P

the cat is happy to sit on my knee and be combed ,nails/claws cut, etc  :)
take the cat to the vet and it turns psycho  ::)
I think it's just comfortable with me and don't like strangers

Spend as much as you like Uncle Stemo  ;)
but the more expensive cordless ones I tried where crap
the corded Wahl ones will cope with "Beaver hair" , so dog hair won't be an issue  ;D

Im tired, leave me alone.  :P ;D ;D

Anyway - dogs. You let them out in the morning to bite the postman & local kids, shit in neighbours gardens and chase cars, because apparently they think that's fun.
Let them back in the house before you go to bed and chuck some of your leftover dinner in their bowl.
Don't see why it needs to be more involved than that.  ::)

I used to clip our two yorkies, Ben was brilliant where he would totally trust me & just stand there while I got on with it & Sam was the opposite, so I used to cut a bit at a time, so he didn't get too stressed. Always found it guite straight forward to do, with most care needed around their ears.

It was the same with cutting their claws where Ben's was done in one go & Sam a claw or two at a time over several days.

I'm fortunate in that respect in as much as my dog has short hair and doesn't need clipping.Giving her a bath on the other hand is a whole different ball game as she hates water with a passion to the point where she will stand a good few inches back from her water bowl and really stretch to reach it for a drink!
