I had one for a while - I don't think I ever even saw 25mpg; it was just as bad as the 3.2V6 that followed it!

why? It's a basic  30 year old diesel engine fitted with an automatic transmission and bolted into a heavy car. Its main attribute was that it was slightly better on fuel than the 2.5l petrol BMW six and almost as civilised. That was so surprising that many buyers were prepared to accept that it had 2.0l performance.

Paper weight?  :D Having pulled a certain admin's one in and out of the engine bay countless times in his search for one that actually works, that's a considerable understatement. ;D

I achieved between 32-34 MPG from my facelift estate auto.
Not chipped either
Had the car 7 1/2 years
Only sold it because the Monza was finished.
Had no room for both cars

I got 29 on local driving and 33 on long distance. Mine was the TD auto estate. Loved it, kept it for 19 years. :y

I used to get 23-25mpg on a commute out of my 2.5TD; a friend used to regularly get 600 miles to a tank on his manual 2.2DTi.. whatever that is in mpg!

BMW's petrol sixes are the same: enormous and heavy. If you fit a small block Ford to a 3 series, the frontof the car sits higher due to the lower weight that is further back in the engine bay. Its short length is one of the Ford's best attributes

my 3.0 auto estate averaged 25mpg in normal use, and 30mpg on French motorways. Got 35mpg coming back from Beaulie, but we barely managed 70mph the whole trip. Well used TD engines aren't exactly durable either.

Chris wanted to use a Chevy(a spare from his Fiat), but didn't want a long project re-engineering the suspension and steering. The Ford went in with no mods to the car, and off the shelf parts on the engine

I used to get around 29mpg from my 2.5TD auto pre chipped, and around 31-33mpg chipped.

On a good, slow run, I could achieve 600 miles from a tank, if it was all motorway miles at motorway speed limits.

Urban driving was woeful though, instantaneous MPG always sub 18mpg.

But I loved the car, once I got over the initial hatred I had for it. I was a first class pillock to sell it.

I seem to recall something like 'about' 28mpg from my Turbo Weasel, versus 'about' 25mpg from my V6... however, factor in the extra pence  in fuel cost and the running costs were nigh-on the same.

Rewind to 1994, when the Omega came out and diesel was what? about half the price of petrol if memory serves? Which made it a far more attractive proposition when they were designing the car, versus the very different world of 2003 at the end of production.

I'm sure your garage door thanked you for it, though.

personally I think that was a first class piece of engineering bodgery especially as it worked flawlessly on the engine, and still opened the garage door!! ;D
