TID to MID upgrade issues...
« on: 05 December 2011, 22:31:06 »

...not least the distinct lack of a loom anywhere near the car. ::)

Picked up a MID, estate stalk with buttons and some other bits and bobs. Pulled the dash apart, MID has different plug on it, foiled at the first hurdle, but a moot point as there is no wiring for the stalk >:( Guessing a dead end has arrived. Put the car back together, and now the TID has stopped to work. It flashed on once when I plugged it in. Field range light comes on with the ignition but top display is blank. Was working fine earlier. >:(

yeah, you will need some minor wiring mods, as explained.

How many pins does mid have?

Will have to have a count int morning. ::) Plug is completly different though :-\ car has yellow plug, MID has grey. I 'liberated' the plug and a couple of inches of the loom for the MID, couldn't get any more loom than that as it was pinned behind dash :-\

P.S. What are said wiring mods? how much more loom do I need to aquire?

Should really have asked the question before I went rummaging around the scrappy, but have always been a bit premature ::)

Yellow. Oh. Bugger. So none of the check control etc are present. Boo.  I would need to check if the engine signal is on the yellow plug...

Get a Haynes Book of Booolax, and look at pinout for both types (Haynes covers early type and later type), and wire it based on that.

Well some progress :y After careful studying of the pictionary book I have done the following:

1. Identified all but one of the wires on the MID loom (that I found connected to the MID :-X).
2. Cross referenced all the wires on the TID loom.
3. Dismantled both plugs and transfered all the common wiring to the MID plug.
4. Connected Pin 6 on the MID to Pin 22 on the instrument cluster (ECU).
5. Connected Pin 26 on the MID to Pin 20 on the instrument cluster (fuel gauge).
6. Connected Pin 15 on the MID to the Brake Pedal Switch.
7. Connected Pin 16 on the MID to Fuse 2.
8. Connected Pins 23 and 24 to the control stalk, carefully modified to use the later plugs. (stalk came from a pre facelift, so may put a new one on at some point).
9. Taped up the remaining 6 wires for now.

The MID works as it should except it keeps telling me to check everything ::)
The head/tail lamp wiring will be grounded. Everything else will be connected accordingly where the engine wiring comes into the car behind the glovebox. Washer level already plugged in, new coolant bottle awaiting collection/fitting. Not sure if check control module is fitted or not but that only seems to check the lights :-\

The only wire that I couldn't identify was SWGR from MID Pin 28. Not listed in the blox book. MID came from a 2001 2.6 CDX auto saloon if that helps.

Sounds like you should do a guide :D

Pin 28, on old TID, or new MID?

Was thinking that as I was typing ::)

Pin 28 on the MID 32 pin grey plug. (TID was 26 pin yellow). :y

P.S. I removed the Grey wire from MID Pin 21 as that goes to th'autobox. Pins 25,30,31 and 32 all empty.

Doh. :D There is a SWGR wire on the brake pedal switch... That said the 'check brakelight' message goes out as soon as pedal is pressed, so could that go to summat on the check control module then :-\

Yeah, there are 2 wires going to different parts of the brakelight circuit.

That's a relief, there isnt much space behind the dash for soldering ::) All the remaining wires will end up behind the N/S kick panel/ Glove box. :y

Curioser and curioser. ???

Swapped out coolant bottle for a shiny new one with sensor, knowing I'd seen a suitable plug about 5 inches from the bottle. Turns out it only has 3 inches of cable on it... easily extended, But...

The wires on it are BR (earth) and BRGN, which according to the book of blocks should be for the Oil Level switch. Guess making a section of loom for that will be the best end result ??? Two other plugs in that vicinity are squarish ones, presumptiously Power Sounder and Bonnet Switch, neither of which are fitted ::)

Given that my car doesn't have an Oil Level sensor (yet)...Is there any reason why I can't connect BRGN (MID Pin 13) oil level with BLGN (INSTR Pin 13) oil pressure. :-\

Thinking that if the pressure were to drop then the MID would then throw up the 'Check Oil Level' message as well as the red tell tale on the instrument cluster. :-\

I probably wouldn't. Besides, if that dash light comes on, its toast anyway...

Oil level isn't a significant issue, it's checked a couple of times a week and changed every 8/9 weeks. :-\

Have a feeling all I would actually do is put the check oil message on permantly as the pressure switch would be waiting for a negative, wheras the oil level would expect a positive :-\
