Alot of white smoke on start up...
« on: 02 July 2014, 16:31:09 »

3.2 manual, 266400 miles.

Substantial puff of bluey white smoke when started cold. Only happened this last week and clears almost instantly.

Valve stem seals or summat more sinister? Still pulls like a train though.

Also getting alot of gurgling from the heaterbox when switching off, which reminds me of the noises my 2.0 dohc Granada used to make when the head went :-\

Have I finally killed it :-\

White Blue is generally Oil related, so yes I would say Valve Stems, Breathers clean?, pop the two front pipes off to see if any excess oil living around the Throttle Bodies, worst case worn Piston Rings but wouldn't have though that the smoke would go away if that was the case.

Auto or Manual?

Pure White or Grey smoke could be a sign of HG Fail, water in oil?

If you catch the smoke in a Bag or something, let it cool down, sometimes you can smell or touch the residue as a clue.

Only happens when cold, and clears after a second or two.

Breathers clear, but oily. Coolant nice and clean.

Other thing Al, if the Cars not being used on a regular basis or stood up for a while, could just be condensation crap in the Exhaust System.

Drove it last week, then four miles yesterday afternoon, followed by 60 miles yesterday evening...

Did it three times including after the 60 mile run, and again this afternoon from cold. No excess water from the exhaust, and no soot either

Been stood for five hours, been out to start it, and nothing, nada, zip ::)

No smoke, no grumbles... only thing I can think is that I topped the oil up yesterday, which might have drained down the valves into the 246 bank :-\

Noticed a rattle from the back box, and on ivestigation found one of the rubbers missing, and tother one at the rear had come off the hanger. The hanger has basically rotted through, allowing the rubbers to slip off...

Anyone fancy welding that back together?

I'd go with the lack of use theory, comparatively speaking of course.

Any white mayo residue on the oil cap when it happens? Oil cap is a good pointer to the condensation level in the engine (and breathers) since the last journey.
