General Car Chat / The chancellors wheels
« on: 18 April 2017, 07:28:44 »
I see on eBay, one satin red 2.6 elite sighted as carrying Gordon Brown, not sure if that increases the £1300 asking price or should lower it?

General Car Chat / Clean wheels
« on: 28 March 2017, 10:22:35 »
In the time I've owned my omega I've cleaned it thoroughly but always seem to have struggled cleaning the inside of the wheels, even useing acid I've found both underbody way and some brake dust remained even with the wheels off the car.

Thankfully yesterday a mate re-aquanted me with wonder wheels and it's stripped all the brake dust and by the look of it underbody wax off the wheels leaving an almost factory fresh😊

General Car Chat / Coil pack breakdown
« on: 22 March 2017, 11:12:11 »
A couple of days ago I started my car as useual and it ran as smoothly as normal.
As I got to work she began to run very lumpy and was struggling for power, luckily Wilbury have squeezed me in  and managed to diagnose the problem.
The coil pack is all cracked with casing missing on one side and was failing to fire 1 and 6.
I am supprised that it broke down so fast but thankfully should be on the road by tonight

General Car Chat / Defrosting screens
« on: 13 March 2017, 08:26:29 »
Has anyone else got slow blowers?
I go out to my frost covered Omega most mornings and once the temperature needle starts climbing direct the warm air to the windscreen.
While the fan is at full power it seems to take ages to clear the screen compared to my old Saab?

General Car Chat / Silver Carlton GSi
« on: 07 March 2017, 18:59:52 »
A fair while ago there was a Carlton GSi 12v  restoration thread and it showed the sort of quality and attention to detail I love, it was under the slogan "not quite an omega ' just wondered if that was still about as it gave me motivation when I struggled with my omega ?

General Car Chat / Oil leaks
« on: 03 February 2017, 03:21:54 »
My CD is in for a major service next week and the team at Wilbury suspect the cam cover gaskets are weeping, I also seem to be getting an oil leak from the bell housing of her automatic gearbox and there's some debate as to were that's coming from (engine or gearbox, anyone able to shed light on the most likely problem?

Ever since a mate of mine has owned Wilbury Bodyshop, MOT and Service Center in Hitchin I have taken my cars there for tyres etc, since having my Omega I have had a lot of help of Paul, Nick Chris and sloth to restore my CD to a proper condition, I adopted her from my Dad in 2008 after a lot of arguments regarding weather I can afford a car doing 28 mpg.

Sadly she'd been a victim of the low walls eather side of our drive and had primer coloured scrapes on both corners of her front bumper, removing what was left of the mud flaps I descoverd light rust on the lower front wings.

Restoring the Omega kind of crept up on me, I noticed the number plate light was mouldy and spent an afternoon stripping and cleaning it before reassembleing it, in her last few years our CD was used to ferry our dog about and after a good day hoovering her out and polishing the glass she was beginning to look half decent although there was plenty left todo.

Thanks to Paul's help I was able to get the bumper and wings stripped and repainted to a really high quality and with a perfect match.

Over the coming years the wheel arches were thoroughly washed clean of the 100,000 miles of road dirt as we're the inside of the wheels.
Months of washing and polishing left her looking far better than when I adopted her and I began to take her out on sunny summer days, the sound of a petrol V6 sounding more appealing than the diesel I used for work.

As time went on the omega began spending longer and longer in the garage to the point we're service parts were exceeding there service life.

The change of management at my local VX dealer and subsequent drop in customer care resulted in the car being recovered to Wilbury for major service and MOT as well as sorting the rear bumpers cracked and peeling lacquer.

Wilbury last saw the car at the end of last year when the fuel tank and rear suspension were dropped off the car to re seal the floor and deal with any rust issues.

Pleasingly these were few and light although the compleat underbody was reseated to protect against the dreaded Tim worm.

I have been making notes on my adventures with the car and how I got into  Vauxhall when I was at secondary school (yes it involved a girl) so maybe put them together at some point.

General Car Chat / How rare is the omega
« on: 31 January 2017, 07:11:44 »
Morning,
I've been looking into weather the Omega is Likely to become a classic after conversations with insurance companies led me to understand that any Vauxhall can be recognised as a classic after it's 20th birthday, I've been getting steadily increasing positive feed back about my CD and a couple of mates have suggested I show her in the summer as a future classic.

Going on line there seem to be two sites offering data on how rare my car is, the DVLA backed "how many left" sated my 2.5 CD Automatic is 1 of 15 taxed and there were some 30 SORN if memory serves.
However there also Omega CDs listed without engine type i.e. 2.2 or 2.6.

How rare is my car by contrast stated in the region of 28 Omega 2.5CD V6 automatics  are currently taxed and these are in fact the most common models on the road.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / CDR2005
« on: 27 January 2017, 18:38:38 »
Over the past year or so I've become unable to play CDs in the car, added to this the display no longer shows radio station but the date or a blank space.
Id like to keep the car original and was wondering about getting the stereo serviced ?

General Car Chat / VXL and VXR
« on: 23 January 2017, 12:36:08 »
clearly VX has a sports range in the VXR/OPC fleet,  how good would it be to have one VXSV /OSV or Elite as a luxury brand?
Im not saying car development is cheap but maybe get the chassis of a commodore and fit a 500hp V8 with a 7 speed auto to a soft suspension set up like the omega.

internally fit it out with night vision like Hitler's taxi, leather heated seats front and rear, four zone climate control, large touchscreen centre console?
I'm guessing GM have the parts to make it happen and at the price £50-60,000
Maybe add some bespoke parts, new steering wheel and gear selector maybe a sun blind?
Like the VXR8 you wouldn't see many but you'd be selling exclusivity and with a new badge and isn't that what most BMW, Mercedes Audi drivers are after?

General Car Chat / VX Dealer support
« on: 23 January 2017, 12:02:55 »
I was a loyal customer to my local VX dealer from the age of about 21 when I bought my first new car, I couldn't understand how the dealers were slated when mine couldn't do enough to help.
There was always banter and when I started taking my dads omega in it was normally followed by mechanics saying how nice she was etc.

Unfortunately I had a seatbelt problem with my Vectra 1.8 SRi and I called them a week before it was due in to say it would need a rear seatbelt for the MOT, I was thinking they'd get the belt or ask to see it but no, the day before it's due in I get a call from the new service manager saying he needs the car now!
I was less impressed when I was given a 100,000 mile Astra estate that had suffered quite a lot of abuse and I kind of lost my sense of humour when I got a call the following day saying the car needed a seatbelt and they needed the Astra back.
After that the manager rang every day asking "can we keep it another day?"and after a week I finally got the car back.
I don't want to seem cynical but when I complained the manager said parts are no longer over night unless your prepared to pay a premium, weeks before the old manager was able to get parts over night and if he couldn't he'd try to help.
What are they doing ?
I went to a dealer up near me and waited over 15 minutes for a parts gue to come to the counter and they weren't  busy.
Earlier this month I was relived of £114 and quarter of a tank of fuel (the light was on) by a nother dealer who took four days to tell me Vauxhall no longer service parts for the Omega.
I was unimpressed before I had to que watching a receptionist playing with her hair rather than letting the service guy know 4 people were waiting.

General Discussion Area / Omega ageing
« on: 22 January 2017, 21:09:33 »
Following on from some helpful advice on here I have remembered to take a photo of my seat belt label and it would seem my car was assembled on or around 7/12/99 so I'm guessing one of the fist FLs?
It was registered the following September so sat around for a while.
I was aware something want quite right when I had a key problem and the fella said the key wouldn't program as a 2000 model year car so thank you for helping enlighten me

General Car Chat / Car insurance
« on: 21 January 2017, 09:08:04 »
I began restoring my omega CD while my Dad still owned it, repainted front wings, bumpers and bonnet a really really deep clean and new windscreen and major service later she was ready to be my wedding car.
While I was insured to drive her she only came out on warm summer days as my main cars were Corsa and Vectra SRi's.
I took official ownership in 2013 and was due to move house last August/ September so did some insurance quotes for a few address and compared them with were I was living  on a comparison site, on that basis once I had moved my insurance company wanted to see the log book as proof I had actually moved.
After sending them a copy I was told that I was only the registered keeper from 2013  and my insurance would go up £200.
The justification for this was that I had less experience in the car than I would have had if I'd signed the logbook over in 2008, despite the fact I'd been driving it since 2007 and pointing out that the log book was irrelevant because it doesn't show driving hours or miles but they weren't having it.
After batteling for an hour I got the insurance back to £500.
