I've been with Green Flag for at least 10 yeas now, but I joined via the Caravan Club's "Mayday" service. The reason for that, apart from the discount offered, is that they cover me AND my caravan (tin tent, as it is known on here....) to my holiday destination and if it has not been repaired by the end of the holiday they recover me and my caravan back home, all as part of the same call-out.
As I pay by DD, I can't say offhand how much it costs me, but I'm not in a hurry to change. Recently I had two separate call-outs close together due to firstly a dead starter motor and the second one due to a dead alternator, so the wick in the engine went out!

I am with you on that, Mr. Terbert; also, they almost certainly were short journey miles and not motorway miles - not good for an engine. It doesn't say when, or if, the cambelt was last changed, either. All questions that need asking.....

James used (I think) carb cleaner on mine after he cleaned my breathers - came up a treat!

I wish I knew how to post a captured image from StreetView because it shows a display trestle on their forecourt that they drive their "Car of the Week" onto. Let me try to describe it:
ample car length skeletal frame with ramps at either end which become end stops when the car is on it and they are swung to the vertical. Angling one end to 45 degrees makes it a gentle slope to drive up onto the long flat part.
Confused yet?
Once the car is in place, the car part of the frame is jacked up to be level and the erstwhile ramp drops down to be the rear prop and end stop.
One picture is worth a thousand words.....

Similar problem with me here, Al; one cat squeezed in through a tiny gap (amazing how they can do that!) into my garage, couldn't get out, apparently, and was sick and cra**ed everywhere! I was not best pleased.
Nonetheless, I would never harm one and always use a big seed tray (no drainage holes in the bottom!) to collect any coolant, etc.

You can buy a stamped metal spanner from most gas retailers/caravan shops for not many pennies - some may even give you one gratis. Oh, and definitely left-hand thread, do not overtighten it as it has a rubber insert.

At last an explicit admission that the VED is nothing to do with pollution, but solely due to governmental greed!
I wonder what would happen if all of the INDEPENDENT scientists banded together to prove that carbon dioxide is NOT the enemy and in fact plays no part in climate change? That is not me denying that changes are taking place, just that WE as motorists or burners of fossil fules are not responsible.
Assuming (wrongly) that CO2 is a factor, the greatest creator of CO2 directed into the atmosphere is us, by breathing - some 92%, in fact. How to reduce this input? Well, we could kill a few people - I'm sure you have your own lists.....

"mogmog", I am also a little bemused by this, not least of which by the size of that fuse. Allowing for a 50% working ration, the solenoid would draw at least 40 Amps? Phew!
Also, there would need to be a LOT of carbon in a 12 volt system to blow such a fuse.
If I had to guess (and we will never know as the OP has had it replaced), I would say that the oil, etc., had gummed up the starter to such an extent that it siezed and held the solenoid in engagement - or doesn't it work like that? If it does, would the stall current of the solenoid be sufficient to blow that grown-up fuse?

What other "Law" in any other walk of life is policed so rigorously policed and prosecuted - or should that be persecuted?
The laws relating to cyclists and their behaviour - jumping red lights, riding on pavements, etc., are routinely ignored, not least when thay actually cycle past beat bobbies on the pavement!
Fair treatment for all?

Sorry, another stupid question - I presume you can still see out?
Oops, another one - does the rear screen heater melt it or get reduced in effectiveness?

Thanks to all; I'll give it a go when I feel brave enough. It will help if we get a summer as my aircon is bozwonk!

Thanks again.
I've just done a little Googling (they can't touch you for it!) and saw a guide that requires copious amounts of soapy water to be applied to both window and film, which led to a silly question - you do this wetting to the INSIDE of the windows? Hell's teeth, that doesn't seem like a good plan!
If you fit the film to the outside, surely it will slide off in an English summer?
