General Car Chat / Re: Costs of running a car
« on: 25 March 2024, 10:14:26 »
As to Zafiras and running costs, mine was an incredibly reliable, cheap to run car.  Bought from auction, a fair few issues were discovered before it even got home, including an inability to rev beyond about 3k rpm ;D.  But once that nice DTM fella had sorted that, it never had more than basic servicing, and I thought it was indestructible.   ...until the front subframe fell apart.

It was gutless, handled shite, was desperately uncomfortable on longer trips.  But it was reliable, practical, reasonably economical (around 40mpg most of the time), cheap to run, and good fun to drive (as you dared not slow down for anything, as took too long to get back up to speed ;D

When it died, we looked at Zafira-B's to replace it, but every single one we looked at was a rust bucket underneath :o

Anyone else know what they've spent, or am I the only one who's this sad  :-\
No, I'm just as sad. Mainly to prove to my boss its impossible to run a decent car on the miserable 28ppm our company pays.  I changed app in November 2021, so seeing stuff before then is a pain involving spreadsheets, which is just an office self-abuser's tool.

Since November 2021, I've spent just shy of £3.7k on mine in servicing costs :o.

Admittedly, the bulk of that is on tyres and wheel straightening.

The Battlebus from the same period to July 2022 when it was scrapped was £96 ;D

Her car has a fair amount spent since July 2022, mostly to get it back up to snuff following purchase, but also on tyres and it needed a pair of new rear calipers.

It's got Bi-xenons that go round corners for some reason, How I've managed all these years going round corners I don't know..
Like many gimmicks, it's one you miss when you suddenly dont have it.

I know Dad missed 'em when he replaced his 1970 DS Safari with a GSA that didn't have them....

My rear garden is north facing, so rarely sees the sun over the winter months.  The slabs start to go green and manky, so do mine every spring.

Just how much mess pressure washing the patios made :o

In my limited defence, they haven't had much more than an annual scrub since we had them built 22 years ago :-X

That said, they look like new and I can honestly say that I am glad I went with a pressure washer with a water cooled motor... Three hours almost non stop without so much as a splutter 8)
I can only do about 45mins a day, as the water doesn't drain quick enough after a while once the adjacent grass is waterlogged :(

Had an enjoyable, fast run across the Dales at dusk.  Reminded me how capable the X351 really is  :y

Is that when it works !!
We were joking earlier on our way back from Yorkshire how it usually breaks down on the way back home from holidays ;D
Did it?  >:D
Surprisingly, yes...

Forgot to put my garden bin out last night.  :(

Now I have to waste a few hours bagging the contents and taking it to the tip.  >:(

Despite having to pay council tax of over £1600 pa ( which to me only covers having the bins emptied) we now have to pay extra (cant remember how much - circa £75 pa) to have our garden waste bin emptied. >:( >:(
I think our council tax came through the other day, £2800 I think, to empty the bins 26 times unless there is a hint of wintery weather...

Our green bin was around £40 since they started charging, but doubled this year, no doubt to help pay for the bone idle lame and lazy.

And, despite charging us 2800/26 = >£100 each time they empty our bins, they want to either half our bin sizes, or move to collection every 3 weeks.  Knowing West Northants council, former South Northants council before they blew all their money on a new office block and went bankrupt, they'll do both.

An old Micra cabriolet pulled in front of me, so I had to do a full on emergency stop.  Never mind, we all make mistakes, so I just followed her along to the next village at a rapid 20mph....    ....where she did exactly the same to another car!

At the first opportunity, I decided to overtake, look in mirror after, she's swerving all over the road, my immense 50mph to overtake must have scared her witless

Just used one of their new touch screen fuel pumps.
Am I imagining it or ... on the old pumps if you just put your debit/credit card in, that the machine just registered the fact that you were going to pay at the pump or did you HAVE to choose pay cashier or pay at pump.

Woman cashier said you had to choose  ..... I said you didn't  :-\ :-\  ::)
Always had to select round these parts, unless it was a Pay at Pump only, or the kiosk was closed
