That's not right!!
« on: 31 May 2008, 14:55:01 »

V6 has been running lumpy and a 'pre-test' ready for the MOT next week had it failing on emissions so thought I would give it some TLC.
Figured since I didn't know the history I would do the plugs as this is a really simple job right? Ha ha ha ha......
Got it stripped down enough to get at the plugs on the passenger side and it looks like the leads are not fully home although I don't have that magic clip thing that the manual shows for doing the job. Never mind I thought, put it back together and do the old paperclip test and see if that says anything....Yeah right....
Fit paperclip, ignition on...1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-9,1-9,1-9hang on a minute it's meant to be 3-1!  Start engine and watch again....1-2,1-2,1-2,1-9,1-9,1-9HELP
Anyone got any clues as to what I'm doing wrong, or alternatively what the fault with the engine might be?

normally, code 19 is crank sensor, not 100% but have u caught the sensor wire at the back of the engine whilst carrying out your lead and plug checks.

i believe if you doing a paperclip test you will get a code 19 if the engine is not running, i presume the car was running when you did the test

Anyone got a quick link to a piccie of where this delightful sensor is?  Just been looking but there is nothing obviously adrift and to be quite honest I don't know what I'm looking for.

The actual sensor is located next to the oil filter but its plug is by the engine lifting eye at the rear of the enging on the passenger side

Code 19 is a sign of a failing crank sensor.

The 19 is actualy an incorrect signal indication, i.e. the signal is 'not what the ECU expects', which does NOT sudgest a poor connection or the thing being disconnected (you would get a 31 with the engine running in this case).

So, change the crank sensor but, look at the connector shape at the rear of teh plenum to know which type to get.

Thanks guys, just goes to show you shouldn't start something you are not qualified to finish....didn't get the plugs changed and now have a full day booked tomorrow to strip it back down to see what I've broken in the process, assuming the weather holds

OK, have to confess my embarrasment since, as so helpfully pointed out above) the fault may have been there all along, but without having paperclipped it before I started we will never know.

Note to self...either do it properly in a logical sequence (like in those procedure documents I spend large parts of my day writing) or give it to someone else to do.

Worry not though, the crank sensor is not hard to change :y
