Spent a pleasant day changing the cam cover gaskets on my 2.5 V6 (thanks to all who have posted how to'd etc....would never have even tried it without those) and have it all back together without any spare screws/washers etc.
Starts and runs fine but I have the engine electrics light on and the paperclip test (once again thanks to all for that) shows 57 and 16.
I'm sure I have just missed a connector somewhere or something equally novice but I don't want to start pulling it apart to try to find it and end up in an even worse state.
Any suggestions for likely candidate?

16   Knock Signal Circuit 1
57   Idle Air Control Voltage Low

Did you turn the ignition on before all the parts were connected back up?

Are you sure its a 16 and not a 17?

Not trapped any wires on the passenger side?

Battery was the last thing to go in as the car had been sat for a while and it had gone flat so was on charge while I was doing the work. Don't 'think' there are any trapped wires but as I said, don't want to go charging in and end up making it worse.

Well, if the throttle butterfly is set right then it wouldn;t start if the idle valve was not connected  (but check anyway!)

16 is drivers side knock sensor the connector for which is on the cable tray mounted on the cam belt cover (or on the EGR valve on early cars), check the cable for its full length for damage in case its been routed incorrectly and has touched the aux belt.

The more common (and its mentioned in the guide) is to trap the passenger knock sensor wire under the cam cover when re-fitting! (this would give a code 17)

Just re-done the test and it is definitely 57 and 16....will check out the suggestions anyway as I can do that without getting tools out which is when I am at my most dangerous

Ah.......that'll be the plug on the back of the ICV not connected......tried again after plugging it in but the same results which worries me. Disconnected the battery for a minute and other than scaring the **** out of my when the alarm went off nothing else changed, still the same codes.

Ok, so we can rule the idle valve out now, is the ECU light still on?

The idle valve code will remain stored for aquite a few clean starts.

Now concentrate on the knock sensor cable

did half a dozen starts and all is now clear....no light and no codes.


Bet you can fix the dent/scrape on the bonnet remotely
