I was out for a drive and as i drove home and was on my street, the lack oil displayed on display. so parked up, I checked the dipstick and there was no oil on it. though would leave if for a bit and made a drink, Went back out checked it again and it was back up to the full line where it was originally, anyone have an idea what it could be ?
I check the oil 1 to 2 times a week and there is no oil marks on the ground, And cannot see any oil leaks around the sump etc, so how could this be doing this, its like something stopping oil going back down oil and filter changed 530 miles ago. oil colour light brown. any ideas ? thanks

Check oil level when warm but rested for 5-10 mins.

I had one time problem on a highway driving longtime at about 3000rpm. There was enough oil but afterwards signs of blocked breather so did a good cleaning to whole air intake and breathers. No problems after that. I use Mobil rally formula 5w-50 and change at 7000-10000km

I went out early this morning and had no problems, I cleaned out the breather lines and oil breather and cam cover breather. I am thinking about changing some of the breather lines and vacuum lines as they looking old, and the breather line from the came cover to the lower intake as turned to a rubber sponge,. there is not meany place round hear to get upto 3000 revs only m1 and out of town/city. I will keep an eye on it, see if it does it again. thanks :y

No engine would ever be designed in such a way that the oil pumped around it would not have time or space to flow back into the sump as you were driving it .this is what you seem to be describing /experiencing.if the oil level is correct before a journey and correct after a standing period after a journey but actually goes down during a journey it sounds as thou something is certainly wrong re drainage back to sump.ive never had this happen before or heard of it but obviuosly anything is possible !. I cannot see the breathers having any effect on this thou especially if the level comes back up to full after standing a while. But could it build up some kind of pressure issue ? ?. Depending on what engine we are actually talking about you could remove oil filler cap or extension spout immediately after switching off when this problem occurs and see if there is a oil level excess in the cam area if you can ? .the oil thats not in the sump must be holding somewhere ? If you find that the cam area is full up of oil then you will need to remove
cover/covers and see whats blocked or chocked up.

Common on the ford OHC engines fitted in the Mk3 Escorts, I recall removing the cam cover on one and was greeted with what looked like peat rich soil liberally spread around the cylinder head to a decent thickness.
Not something I have ever seen on the V6 though which has oil returns which are a decent size at each end of the head on the exhaust side:

i will have a look round and see if i can get hold of a return line cleaner brush used to have one for the ford i had years ago, should clean the large line return lines back to the sump. :y

My daily driver clearly uses a little oil (especially when you are utilising the full rev range frequently ::)) over a 1000 miles, if the oil warning comes on there is nothing on the dipstick, if you wait 20 mins you might be lucky and see the first notch (I guess 1/5th litre) oil level.
I guess it needs the valve stem seals doing but can I really be bothered on a 178K 15 year old daily driver.... ??? :-\

My personal experience matches most others. If you get Oil Lack on MID (or Check Oil Level on GID/CID), then when you turn engine off, oil is normally around half way up between min and max.

well ordered some brushes https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gunson-77086-Engine-Cleaning-Brushes/dp/B003ZUXYR8 ,so will do anothwr oil change after usd the brushes. :y
