Title: Air con/climate
Post by: BazaJT on 03 November 2017, 19:36:22
While tinkering the other day before I took the Elite for the M.o.T. I pressed the "auto"button on the dash[we're talking F/L here]and all 3 fans kicked in and ran at high speed-the car was at less than 80 on temp gauge so they hadn't fired up due to engine temp-pressing the "eco" button caused them all to shut down.Is this the correct outcome? If it is then as the aircon has never blown cold would it be purely down to not having enough gas[or whatever it is]in the system to operate properly but still enough for the fans to work?Or would the fans work on auto regardless of gas or no gas?

Eco switches the aircon off (or on)...

Auto is merely a setting for the interior fan speed and vent output... It maintains the cabin temp without driver input regardless of Aircon function.

Remember, air conditioning is but one element of the climate control system ;)

With eco showing on the display the interior fan runs at whatever speed I select with the buttons. With auto showing the interior fan runs as fast as it will go[but I suppose I could alter this also] It was just the way all 3 Radiator fans ran at high speed when I turned auto on and then stopped running when eco was showing,is this what's supposed to happen regardless of whether the air con system is functioning or not?

Selecting Auto ramps the interior fan up initially, before slowing it as the desired temp is reached.

If turning Eco OFF turns the front fans ON, that suggests that the aircon is functioning correctly, as with no gas, pressing Eco does nothing either way as the system pressure switches dictate whether the aircon functions or not.

With Eco selected, pressing Auto should only trigger the interior fan... ie it will make sod all difference to the front fans regardless of the combination.

The two buttons happen to be on the same panel, but do completely unrelated things. What you're suggesting is akin to pressing the hazard switch and expecting the boot to open ;)

Thanks for that I now have a better understanding of what's what :y Only had the car 6yrs,and knew that no matter what there was never any cold air from the vents so didn't really pay much attention after that :-[
