Title: What do Southern Rail drivers get....
Post by: STEMO on 08 November 2017, 21:07:37
.......for all the misery they’ve caused?
A 28% pay rise. That’s one Union the government would love to break.

No bad thing.

Hastens their demise and the advancement of driverless trains.

Part of the agreement says there will be a ‘trained’ person on board the train, as well as the driver, whatever that means.

Can ts to the man... Southern themselves are as bad... If they cancel services they don't lose their On Time bonuses as the trains aren't delayed. >:(

Complete shower of shit from start to finish.

When comrade Corbyn gets the keys to number 10, we will all be getting 28% pay rises.  :y ;D

For a couple of years or so until the economy collapses into total ruin.

Seriously though. To me its a sign of a return to week governance and management, when people who do a relatively menial job, can extort a pay rise like that in the current times. Its disgraceful.  >:(

Simple answer. Shut it all down. Spend taxpayers money on something useful.

This will only embolden other unions, especially those representing public sector workers.  :(

Winter of discontent anyone?  ::)

With several driverless taxis being introduced next year, pilotless flying taxis on the horizon with trials before 2020, I suspect the technology disruption will force price and wage reality in the rail industry so they have to automate trains or they will not be used due to price and convenience, like in the 1960's-1980s.

Makes HS2 look more and more like the white elephant it is.

My younger brother worked in the newspaper industry and saw the bloody-minded unions fail to grasp the technological changes that were happening in the 1980's, so they hastened the demise of 90% of the jobs. :o :o :o

Don't very often use trains but on the odd occasion I have found them to be punctual clean & comfortable, if the drivers earn a good wage good for them.

The striking Southern drivers deserve to be unemployed... at best they should be paid for the hours the actually work rather than their full salaries. There is absolutely no excuse for their or the Unions behaviour... the disruption that they have caused over the last few years, (3 or 4 iirc), was totally unnecessary and driven by nothing more than spite.

If they are paid a goof wage by an employer which makes plenty of profit from their labours and can easily afford to pay them well, then I would agree, good luck to them.
However, this is far from the case and they have held all and sundry over a barrel to extract a 28% rise, when the railways are heavily subsidised by me, even though I don't use them, and the industry desperately needs heavy investment.
I would offer the Clarkson solution for them.

I have no problem with people getting a pay rise and earning a decent living but 28% :o :o :o that's just absolutely ridiculous-I could use other terms but this is a family friendly forum.

Southern Rail should get the people from Hornby in.  They know how to run a (driverless) railway!  ;D

I watched a programme recently on public sector pay in which they focused on a police officer , fireman and nurse.
I was truly humbled when the police officer announced that she earned £22 K per annum and was currently living in a hostel with her 16 yo son . She was determined to stay in the force even though she would probably be better off leaving and entering the benefits world . I had a lot of sympathy for her and the other two who were in a similar trapped situation.
When I see this report it makes me very , very angry at how they manipulate and use their power of disruption over the mass public.

I (mostly) agree, but we need a radical rethink on how to fund it all. We've run out of rich people, and as a nation, we've told all the big multinationals to FO somewhere else.

Tough decisions need to be made, and virtually most public services closed down. But the (thick) British Public are not ready for that yet.

Most of the big multinationals have been somewhere else for years, like Luxembourg or Ireland.  They maintain operating bases in the UK the costs of which are offset against their UK tax bill, which is minimal as they report the bulk of their profits elsewhere in lower tax regimes.  ::)

Facebook paid the UK treasury £2.58 million (after deductions) in 2016.  All perfectly legal of course.  ;)

There are a lot of UK multinationals that do pay reasonable levels of tax. And won't soon.
