General Car Chat / Good week on omega repairs
« on: 03 November 2017, 06:55:07 »
Have left in a fews days  . .just to make sure all is ok  . . but have had good results on the following issues .

I have replaced my bodge repaired slightly leaking coolant rad with one from Coolparts (57)

Job looked more difficult than it actually was & I would confidently do it probably half the time now.

Bigron  came down & after getting my rad in & all up & running together we replaced his one .

Almost had to get the "Kango" out to remove the epoxy resin repair Ron had done . ;D

All went well on Ron's car as well ( apart from a minor problem where a vacunm pipe connection broke off from

the back of the bagpipes  . . .  .brittle plastic issue )  we were however able to do a decent repair on this .

Ron's car was soon back together & up & running  & off he went back to Witham a very happy omega owner.

Have also managed to get to the source of the battery drain issue ( see electrical section)

TB is now gloating because it was he's hated Sony product that was at fault   ;D ;D

So all in all a good week for repairs on the omega  . . all carried out with excellent advice from OOF  :y

So all in all

Omega General Help / removing ATF cooler
« on: 28 October 2017, 18:10:31 »
Changed coolant rad today  . . all seems good  . . .apart from their is a small ATF fluid leak from the short length of rubber pipe where the pipes actually go into the ATF rad. This is on the near side . These 2 short rubber sections (1 each side of the rad ) are clipped to the pipe work with stainless clips . ATF is oozing out of the top joint of the n/s one .

Can I remove the ATF rad out to look at /resolve this leak with having to remove the coolant rad again ? :-\ :-\

TIA   Al ;)

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / 0.11 amp drain?
« on: 25 October 2017, 20:00:44 »
Don't use the CDX much at all really  . . . in fact Mon - Fri does not go anywhere ::)

And remember before you get too techy guys ,I don't do much  electrickery  :-[ :-[ :-[

So . . .In those 5 days the  battery goes almost completely flat  . . sometimes just enough left to operate the central locking & thenget a dim set of ignition lights on dash.

Have done all of Kevins checks in his guide . .. battery good, all charging ok but  on the subject of current drain though,  the multimeter reads 0.39 A  for about 9 mins  then drops to 0.11  with a then occasional fluctuation to 0.06 A   or 0.04 A  returning to 0.11A

Kevins guide suggests 0.07 A      so is my reading of 0.11  within tolarence ?

Or is there something going on .     Power sounder has been binned by the way  ;)

Don't have the standard head unit  . . got a Sony MD/radio fitted  ( sure thatTB will blame that as the cause  . . ;D ;D )

TIA   Al :y

Omega General Help / oil filter housing question
« on: 15 October 2017, 17:00:07 »
Oil change earlier today . . .  went to undo alloy cap & housing started to move with it.

Got a "massive" pair of water pump type pliers on it with a second pair of hands & off camre the cap  :y

The housing was then free to revolve . . .not good me thinks . . . so used the usual 12mm allen key adaptor to remove it & have a good look.

My question is  . . should there be some kind of stop cast into the housing to stop it spinning?

With it off . . there was nothing obvious & also nothing broken off that I could see.

So on re fitting does the housing go on in a certain position regarding revolving  . . .meaning do any holes have to line up with anything in the block?

I seem to recall there should be some sort of "stop" that locates the housing in the correct position.

Or I am I getting confused with something else? :-\ :-\     any advice appriciated  ;)

I have just put it back on & tightened the allen bolt in the centre very tight , fitted filter & re tourqed cap to 15nm

General Car Chat / Fresh MOT on the 2.6 CDX
« on: 29 September 2017, 16:28:00 »
Good news  . . .another pass . . .1 advisory . . . slight corrosion on 1 front to rear brake pipe   :'(     fussy bugger my MOT man  :'( ;D ;D

Better than last year  which had a few minor advisories, but sorted most of them .

Have to say up on the MOT lift , this car looks really good underneath . Now on 194,000 And 17 years old  8) 8) 8)  MOT man said it is very good all round  :y :y

Thinking my 300 investment for this Omega  just over  a year ago was a decent  one.

Happy Days  . . :y :y :y :y

Omega General Help / Radiator change
« on: 17 September 2017, 07:46:45 »
Along with Bigron , we both will have to have a new rad for our 2.6 omegas.

I've had a quick search for a "how to" on here  . . .but nothing found ( probably is   but I cant find it  :()

Question is ,  are there gearbox oil cooler pipes to be disconnected when doing a rad change?  I know (obviously) there are several coolant pipes to come off as well as disconnecting the electrical connections to the rad switches etc.

But is the gearbox fluid cooler part of the rad or a separate item that does not need to be touched?

Any advice greatly appriciated . . .TIA  :y

General Car Chat / Omega pranged on the M25 this morning
« on: 17 May 2017, 18:58:21 »
Saw what "was" a decent Rubens Red saloon which had been involved in a shunt around 6-30am on the clockwise side of the M25.

Not far out of the Bell Common tunnel heading towards the M11 junction & Dartford.

Looked like a CDX from the wheels , nasty damage to front & slightly less to the rear. But looked in a sorry state  :'( :'( :'(

Hopefully no one on here

Any oofers heard of this system ? :-\

Seems the employer issues you with a mobile phone with this "crystal ball" app installed & it tracks both the vehicle  & the employee , just tracking the employee when  the employee leaves the vehicle.

Apparently works 24/7  & accurate to 1 Metre.

Big Brother has arrived if what I've been told is correct.

So big question is :   are employers allowed to track the employees themselves ? :-\

Does the employee have to agree to be tracked personally?

How does the employee know he / she is not being spied on out of working hours ?

Interesting one this   ::) ::)

Omega General Help / Awful Rattle ?
« on: 03 April 2017, 20:13:08 »
The 2.6  estate has developed a horrid rattle on start up .  Only happens from a complete cold start :-\   It's comming from drivers side cat area & if I push on the underside heat shield for that cat it stops instantly :-\

I was thinking it was the underside heatshield vibrating against the cat , but could it be something inside the cat , that stops rattling when the heat expands it a bit.

Noise carries on for about 60-90 seconds then is all quiet again .  Car has to be left for 3-4 hours before it will make the noise on start up again  :-\

Cats are not GM but fairly recent aftermarket that were on the car when I got it.

What do you think guys  . .. .rattle inside cat ?

Sad news that Chuck has passed away today aged 90  . .  . :'( :'(

not the most prolific of guitar players but he certainly had an influence on me. :y

Johnny B Goode was one of the first guitar intros I ever learned back in the day

Been a fan of his Rock'nRoll style since I was kid  . . . RIP  Chuck you'll be sadly missed

General Car Chat / Big insurance hikes all round ?
« on: 12 March 2017, 10:39:12 »
Just been looking at insuring a 1.8  '05 mondeo  . . :o :o  200 more than the 2.6 omega :o :o

So then put details in for the omega as a comparison  . . .that is 200 more than I paid in September  as well  :o :o

5 star policy full comp with Co-Op for the omega was 216 in September

Now 418  . . .  what causes an across the board increase like that FFS ?

Omega General Help / Another new HBV failed
« on: 14 January 2017, 11:55:50 »
Following on from the recent report of a new genuine HBV failing . My newly fitted (200 miles) genuine one is leaking from the join along the side( scuttle off & a close examination) . Went out this morning & low coolant popped up after about 15mins driving .  Called VX  they seem to be ok with replacing it if I have the reciept  . . .which I have  of course  ;)

But do I want another from the same batch ?   . . .   not if I can help it . . . we'll see what occurs  :-\ :-\

Bottom line is that these HBV's are really quite cheap now  . . . under 20

but has the quality nosedived ? :-\ :-\
