The only use of a complete second hand strut is that it allows you to build up a new strut/spring/topmount ahead of doing the actual job...

New spring, bearing, top mount and bump stop/dust cover, as on all of those parts were knackered on every one I've taken apart. It costs about £100 in parts per side, but means the front end is good for at least another 100,000 miles)more than the life of most remaining cars) without issues. All I want from a strut are the rubber isolators, spring cup and spacers/washers. I still have a spare set of those, so would build a complete strut in a spare 5 minutes. Like I did here:

into this

that was several days before we started on the car.

That will learn you for even looking at it.

Popping the bottom hose is far more efficient for draining the system without breaking anything  ;)

Refit the old one and be thankful that you didn't break it...

It goes around the tensioner and then slips on over the waterpump pulley.

Trying to fit the standard belt any other way is a hiding to nothing as it won't fit over the flange of the other pullies.

They are the same saloon/estate.

Overlooking the obvious...

Was the aux belt fitted the same way round...

They can object to being fitted so that they are effectively runnong in reverse...

Typically they are marked in direction of travel.

Pop it off a run the engine. If no noise refit the original belt in the opposite direction of rotation and report back :y
