OK Guys, I just drilled it out and tapped it to take an M14 x1.5 plug, only an hour's job with the oil change, and the larger plug will make it less likely to strip in future. Incidentally I used a 12mm drill rather than the recommended 12.5mm, and it was the ideal size in ally, probably 12.5mm would be OK in steel.
On this subject, I rather like the look of the Femco replacement sump plugs, with an integral drain, especially for ally sumps. Has anyone any experience of them?
