General Car Chat / More MOT's
« on: 05 November 2020, 17:06:40 »
Put both the daily and the project cars in for MOT's last friday.

Project car (113K) passed with advisory for minor oil leak - front cam seal is my bet but until the cam cover gaskets need doing I won't be worrying about that.

Daily driver (239K) failed on only one point - major exhaust leak.... Well it would do as the backbox wasn't connected to the mid pipes by much! I didn't want to get a back box before as I needed to know if there was any other MOT fail points before I started spending money! Anyway, new backbox from Poland (ordered Friday evening, delivered Wednesday lunchtime!) fitted today and a clean MOT on that one.

Typically the Project car thanked me by pissing ATF out of the cooler pipe yesterday so now need to fix that and fill the box up again.  ::)

Got to take Mrs VXL's Astra in next month  :D

Omega General Help / Transmission cooler pipe
« on: 04 November 2020, 19:06:35 »
Seem to have developed a leak from the flexi hose between the stainless steel pipe and the oil cooler, it looks as though the pipe has moved and kinked the flexi part.  ???

Cooler looks sound and I can't see any other likely culprit for the leak. I have posted in the Wanted section for another pair of pipes complete as the flexi is crimped onto the stainless pipe so can't easily replace it without taking the whole pipe off and taking it to Pirtek etc (also not helped by other car failing it's MOT so no transport unless I use Mrs VXL's car which would mean taking her to work etc).

Is there a reason for the pipes to be stainless / metal on the chassis rail? I know it's close the manifold but the lower flexi pipes are close to the pre-cat and they don't have any protection? I was wondering if I could just get some suitable 'ATF' compatible pipe and run it straight from the gearbox connection, along the original route lightly cable tied to the other pipe and onto the oil cooler connection?

I know I could loop out the cooler and gearbox at the gearbox end to get me by but clearly I need to fix the problem!

The ones that run along the top of the chassis rail and have flexi hoses at either end.

PM me a price please!  :y

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - HID Headlights
« on: 04 October 2020, 17:27:00 »
Must have adjustment (the metal bar and white adjustment wheel at the rear) that isn't seized, not too worried about failed adjuster inside the headlight.

Ideally half decent lenses as well but not essential.

After a failed attempt at pairing the NCDC / CID and Telematics in the project car on my last visit due to me not knowing the correct pairing code, a flying visit tonight has seen that issue resolved (and pinpointed another issue with my wiring loom  ::) :-[).

History of this was that the car had sat for a long time without a battery connected and the NCDC Head unit had clearly got upset about this and needed to have the firmware re-flashed and the screen paired again, add to this I wanted to add the Telematics phone unit (If you've got it you may as well install it!).

The moral of the story is, if you move these headunits / screens etc around and you have the pairing code, don't forget to write it down on the car pass of the vehicle it's going into!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Gasket for saloon GPS antenna
« on: 19 September 2020, 14:03:47 »
Has anyone ever located one of these?

Typically there are hundreds available for the estate GPS base and the standard phone aerials but none that I can find for the smaller saloon GPS / GSM (As fitted to the Saloon Elite) base.

I know you could smear some black silicone around it but would prefer the proper gasket

General Car Chat / Cheap daily runaround car?
« on: 12 August 2020, 15:37:45 »
What would peoples thoughts be for a cheap runaround that can munch a few miles if necessary and is cheap to run but not a wheezy shopping car?

By cheap I mean less than £2K
By munch miles I mean around 20-25K a year?
Cheap to run would probably mean something under 2.0 Litres and possibly a diesel?

I was thinking along the lines of:-

Astra H 1.6 Petrol or 1.7CDTi (although the seats would need to more supportive than the ones in Mrs VXL V6's Design model)

Signum 1.9

Astra G (MK4) 1.6 petrol or 1.7CDTi - I still like these and they are simple to work on and don't suffer many rust issues

318d / 320d - A bit more refinement over the Vauxhall offerings.

Obviously I haven't researched in any great detail, i'm just interested in peoples thoughts.

General Car Chat / Refurbishing Irmscher Steering Wheel
« on: 22 July 2020, 11:20:06 »
Just purchased a used Irmscher wheel with radio controls  :)

It has the silver trim which needs refreshing and my plan was to repaint it, however, it appears to be soft touch so presumably a film rather than paint is required?

Any ideas anyone?

Looking for the spring clips that hold the top radiator mounts in place, failing that the part number.

One turned to dust on the project  :'(

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - V6 Starter Motor
« on: 22 June 2020, 22:47:46 »
Hello, still after a starter motor for a 3.2 V6 (I believe all V6 starters are the same).

A generally good condition one will be fine as I will be refurbishing it before fitting as I know 3.2 ones all seem to stick with age.

28
After two....  ::)

Must have steering wheel head unit control mounting points and be in generally good condition, ideally gloss wood and silver versions but not essential as will be refurbished.

I've asked a couple of times but thought i'd check again.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Telematics Aerial plug
« on: 01 June 2020, 09:47:51 »
Can anyone recall what antenna plug the Nokia RTE-2RH Telematics unit is?

I'm struggling to identify it or find any documentation.

As per title. front solenoid 90 493 702 required.

Will repair the one I have but would prefer to buy one, replace the microswitches and fit that so I can do the whole procedure in one go.

Thankyou :)
