Omega General Help / Bench testing a dispack
« on: 30 January 2010, 16:54:10 »
Hi,

Today I fitted a new dis pack as the last one failed after only 9 months, presumably brought on by a failed HG flooding the cylinders.

The only test I can think of doing is resistance of the coils, with each pair measuring approx 10.3kohm. Physically it looks fine, unlike the previous one which had split.

Just interested to know if there are anyother tests that can be done before consigning it to the scrap heap.

Took me 3 hrs if anyone is interested, wipers off to wipers on. The baths running as I type.

Omega General Help / Auxiliary drive belt part number
« on: 27 January 2010, 22:43:58 »
Hi all.

I have found on t'internet the part number 93181720 to suit x25xe with air con.

My concern is whether that is the right number, as the Autovaux description mentions it being only 2020mm as a replacement for the original 2260mm. In my book thats 5 1/2 inches lost. Is that right?

Omega General Help / head gasket now beyond doubt I'm afraid!
« on: 17 January 2010, 15:50:33 »
Further to my recent topic and posts, I think I have now put the is it / isn't it question beyond doubt.

Ran her up to temp then pulled the plugs from 2-4-6. Shone a torch into 2 and 4, saw a puddle in 4. Dipped the cylinder with rolled up kitchen roll and it came out sodden and pink. So at least now I know and can start thinking about options which as I see them are:-

1. Can it,
2. Fix it or
3. Get it fixed.

Despite it being old with unknown history, shoddy bodywork and non working a/c I'm tending towards 2 or 3, as I have already spent a fair bit (and secretly I like a car that runs well but looks crud)

Whilst it's in bits what else should I do/get done. Cam cover gaskest are a no-brainer as they leak. Belts and water pump looked newish 9 months ago but I have no hard evidence of them being changed. Condenser is corroded and probably explains where all my refrigerant has gone. Radio is out of a Cav and the tape dont work. The more I think about it, the more option 1 makes sense.

Off to lubricate the grey cells now, but any opinions would be welcome.

Omega General Help / Cold start misfire on a V6
« on: 16 January 2010, 09:07:47 »
Any ideas where to start looking?

Always starts easily but in the last 2-3 weeks has been missing for the first 30 seconds or so. It then clears and runs fine. Clears sooner if given a good rev.

Failed dispack fitted last April, with new plugs and good condition replacement leads from markey mark.

I have an oil leak which I think is from the front of the right hand cam cover gasket, but so far there is not any oil in the wells of 1 & 3, just down the front of the engine onto the sump flange and undertray.

Any pointers welcome before I start fumbling around.

Omega General Help / Oil on the road and in the V!
« on: 29 December 2009, 13:08:36 »
Hi All,

Noticed a good amount of oil on the road today in the rain, so have been trying to trace its source. I am sure its mine as the level has dropped.

Under the bonnet I found a good qty on what I would call the front sump mounting flange and also on the undercard beneath the radiator. After removing the bags and peering under the throttle body I also can see oil in the V, looking like it is up the sides of the heads. Thinking rocker cover gaskets I pulled some leads on the easiest to get at plugs (1&3), but the holes seem dry.

The breathers were cleaned in April, but I pulled the pipes and squirted some carb cleaner in and this seemed to pass straight through into the plenum as it should.

Cold, wet, despondent and with concerns of throwing good money (and time) after bad I ask the following.

Assuming the cam gasket has let go on the inside only, could this oil in the V have found its way down to the front sump flange with no obvious traces. ie can it get down the back of the cam belt cover?

How does it make the leap to pool on the undercover?

How long should it take a rusty diy'er to replace the gaskets following the guide I have just read on here.

On a 99 gls with tired body and 150K thats just had £900 spent (including tyres and mot), would you bother?

Omega General Help / Is resume always in such a rush?
« on: 02 December 2009, 23:45:32 »
My car did not come with cruise, but thanks to a member and tips on here I fitted one.

Everything works fine and has done for 6 months, except for one niggle. When I press resume, even if I have only slowed a little such as waiting to change lane on the motorway, the cruise wants to get me back to speed as fast as possible. Not only is this disconcerting but quite often it's impractical, not to mention the fuel cost, 'kick-down' and making me look like a muppet.

Is there anything can be done or do I forget resume, uncross my legs and set my speed again manually?

Omega General Help / New poly bush gets MOT advisory
« on: 19 November 2009, 09:55:37 »
So I fitted a powerflex kit about 600 miles ago and went for MOT yesterday. Failed on a worn tyre (muppet I know, but the worn shoulder was the reason I fitted the poly bushes and then went to WIM, and I knew it would be borderline).

When giving me the advisory the tester said one side was rock solid but the other moves under braking, indicating a worn bush.

Anyone else had problems with these bushes, or any idea what might be wrong? Hope to get under there at the weekend to have a look as long as its fine(ish).

Naturally the bushes both sides were fitted at the same time in the same way, greased with the supplied grease and tightened under load, though the old bolts were reused.

Omega General Help / Residual heat system with manual aircon.
« on: 06 October 2009, 16:03:08 »

My car has got the extra pump fitted, plumbed between the matrix and the hbv, and its plugged in electrically.

Can anyone tell me if this should work (if so what do I have to do to make it - I have no manual ) or is it a redundant system?

Omega General Help / Wishbone/polybush torque values.
« on: 12 October 2009, 12:15:57 »
Are the torque/angle values the same whether using poly bushes or standard? Got some powerflex to fit and don't want to knacker them through ignorance or assumption.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Omega General Help / Headlight earthing point
« on: 19 September 2009, 13:03:53 »
Hi,

Can anyone confirm where the headlight earth point is before I start pulling things apart? I can see leads going to a stud beneath the battery but to get to it may require removing the battery and possibly top hose, or at least letting it cool.

I'm dropping half a volt between the negative terminal on the battery and the earth contact at the rear of the n/s light, so wanted to brighten up the earth to see if I can see some road at night.

Thanks in advance

Omega General Help / No Vacuum to HBV
« on: 20 September 2009, 15:34:34 »
Hi

I am not getting any vacuum to the top of the hbv, irrespective of what i do with the heater controls (old style rotating knobs). I guess the supply of vacuum is switched somewhere, can sombody please advise where?

For info, I do have vacuum to the distribution knob and can direct air as desired even after the engine is switched off, so I believe the supply of vacuum into the cabin is ok, just not getting through to the hbv.

Thanks in advance

Omega General Help / Play in forward wishbone mount.
« on: 20 April 2009, 17:23:01 »
Should there be any? I can lever mine out 3/16 with a screwdriver and light pressure. There is a rattle and clonk as I drive and the drop links seem firm enough.

I've read the how too, but how long a job is changing wishbones for average Joe, and is there any gain in buying OE over pattern parts?

Omega General Help / Cooling system explanation please.
« on: 18 April 2009, 12:51:58 »
Thinking my rad to be blocked I have today removed it and given it a good flush out. Sure enough I got seven shades of proverbial out of it, including some quite lumpy bits of scale.

Can somebody please educate about the purpose and operation of the auxiliary coolant pump and pipework. The reason I ask is that as soon as the engine gets warm this pipe gets warm, and to my way of thinking it is providing an easier route for the coolant rather than going through all those narrow channels. Consequently this can get untouchably hot whilst the matrix itself is still cold, even up to the point when the fans kick in.

If I wrap this pipe in rag and pinch off the flow, it does seem to have the effect of  forcing more water through the rad.

Any explanation would be welcome. BTW, not that I think its related but the aircon is U/S.

Omega General Help / Does this sound like HBV symtoms?
« on: 16 April 2009, 22:19:13 »
Hope so as that might be the lesser of many evils.

Sound of escaping water/steam for a few seconds followed by a strong smell of coolant in the cabin. Stopped and looked for leaks but nothing found, roads wet etc. Temperature within normal range.

This happened 3 times, the last one near to home and more prolonged, and as I got into town and stopped briefly at some lights the temp gauge went into the red. Meanwhile the fan is working overtime.

Just got in so not sure yet how much if any coolant I have lost as the motors still V hot and wanted to post before you all get tucked in for the night.

Omega General Help / Headlamp adjustment to visit le continent
« on: 16 April 2009, 14:57:17 »
I'm sure I have seen this how-too somewhere here recently but blowed if I can find it now and Ive been on the search for over an hour.

Maybe I just dreamt it.

Iirc there was a lever or sorts behind the rear cap?
