Omega General Help / Re: Play in V6 water pump. How much is too much?
« on: 07 December 2015, 17:18:31 »
Following on from Saturdays thermostat change and coolant flush I now have a significant coolant leak down the front of the engine. Accept that the 'stat/transfer pipe would be obvious candidates but using an endoscope/boroscope laptop attachment that area looks dry so thought I'd have a feel of the water pump.

There's definitely a 'rock' there, so wondering if there is an amount of movement permitable or if any play would point to a likely source of leak.

I've had it in the past where a flush and a change of coolant seems to find or exacerbate leaks that were not previously an issue.

On a side note, the aux belt tensioner assemblywas loose, literally hanging on by a thread or two of the bolts. And this car like many others has supposedly been professionally maintained.

Off to modify a coolant cap now.

Steve

Correction, the tensioner was hanging by the last thread or two of one bolt. The only thing stopping the other bolt going down the road was its resting on the cable guide for the alternator.

Omega General Help / Re: Stats....
« on: 06 December 2015, 22:08:03 »
For future reference if anyone is searching, the thermostat part numbers for a 2.6 as advised by Evans Halshaw are:-

Thermostat in housing 95517665,  Price £40.29 + vat on t/c.
Seal ring 24447061, price £1.21 + vat on t/c.

This 'stat has a 6mm flange. The one I took off (03 elite) had an 18mm flange. I found some slightly shorter bolts but still had to use a stack of washers under the heads :-\

I went to a stealer for the transfer pipe and t/c coolant but asked for the stat thinking they would a, have it in stock ;D and b, give me an exact replacement for my exact engine no ;D ;D ;D,.

General Car Chat / Re: Anyone interested in this... 2.5 mfl saloon

How much ?
I might have to rethink my 'drop it off at the fire station' strategy :'(
When I looked, it was £5.10 with two bids... apparently advertised elsewhere for £250 ;)

Sorry, perhaps I should of said 'HOW MUCH!!!', as in £5.50 is a pint and a bag of nuts. Perhaps gifting mine to cuthbert, dibble and grout is far to charitable.  ;D

General Car Chat / Re: Omega saved
« on: 02 December 2015, 22:45:17 »
Saved the Omega from certain death today  :( Was giving a foreign lorry driver plenty of room on the roundabout then he decided to cut me up forcing me into the curb  >:( >:( If i had carried on i doubt he would of even noticed half the car embedded in the side of his trailer  >:( >:(

Surely you saw him indicate his intentions way back and made a prudent decision based on your experience to keep well out the way :P
To be a little tiny bit fair, in a lhd artic turning right offside mirrors (assuming they're a, clean and b, being looked at) give a nice view of the side of the trailer. Even the wide angle is a compromise, and if the drivers a short arse his view through the side window may be way over your roof.

Chances are he saw you though - just didn't give a monkeys. Had you hampered him at an earlier roundabout or been hanging off his quarter for a while so he couldn't approach in the right lane, 'cos we all hate that.

Sadly it's not just left hookers that have half-wit overseas drivers. Some agencies are flooding the market with Romanian tractor drivers and such like and some companies, desperate to deliver Christmas, choose not to ask too many questions. It seems to go in waves. 10 years ago it was Polish imports being pumped into companies until the insurers and accountants called foul on the damage bills.

Both auto. I have no interest in 'riding a stick' as my colonial colleagues used to say.

Apologies, I realise more info up front would be helpful..

03 2.6 estate
99 2.5 estate

I'm assuming they'll both have AR25 and mountings will be identical, but as I'm away from home im just trying to find out my options

2.6 elite estate. I'm guessing the gearbox mount has had it.

Can I swap the good one from my 2.5 soon to be scrapper?

Omega General Help / Re: Stats....

I ordered a genuine from Evans Halshaw on Thursday. After much keyboard activity behind the counter it appears the two part numbers representing thick and thin flanges have been superseded by one new number.
Whether that's thick, thin or something else I've yet to find out. The wife collected it today and I'm not home until tomorrow.

Hoping to better my previous pb of 8 hours for a 'stat change as well.

Eight hours! I resented the roughly 90minutes I spent doing mine!

Ah but last time was my first foray under an Omega bonnet and everything was new and exciting.  5 years further on and it's all too familiar. Even so by the time I've cleaned the breathers and checked the plug wells I'm not expecting change from an afternoon.

Omega General Help / Re: Musings on wishbone bolts

I have done the job before but with Poly's. This time I'm changing drop links and track rods as well so encumbrances will be at a minimum.

Don't remember the final 'hoik' being that hard last time, but I was 5 years younger and the rear bush was probably not offering as much resistance as a new one will. I have enough neighbours seem to think their sole purpose in life is walking past saying 'why don't you buy a new one' every time I have the tools out, there's one or two I can trust to apply a bit of leverage.

I'm liking the idea of the two stage tightening from brother Entwood. Bush gets clamped in the right position then Torque gets done accurately with sufficient access.

Looks like Monday's the day as apparently I have to do things that 'normal' people do at the weekend.

Omega General Help / Re: Heater

You could just take it apart and remove the impellor, or revert to standard plumbing.

Of course, you then wont be able to keep warm while waiting at a level crossing though.

Spoilsports, we all know i'll end up doing it the oof way but I like to let the mind ramble over alternatives. And I like playing with string.

One things for sure - I wont be using a kerb as that implies rolling in the gutter and there are limits.

I have some vintage ramps. My soon to be bride gave them as a 21st present having seen the collection of junk my old Dolly got propped up on. They've never been the same since I reversed a carlton off the back of them, trapping myself in the car half in the garage in the process.

I was thinking more 'lifting' than 'jacking' under the ball joint but take the point. Maybe a angle iron half cup under the wheel boss wound up on some threaded rod would be more appropriate.

But seriously, I thought I read that ATP parts had their name on them which implied a level of confidence in the product. Cant find it on these beauties.

Have you got the auxiliary pump mounted near the air filter/ coolant reservoir? I think when (not if) that gives up the ghost it acts as a restriction in the heater flow.
