And I don't really care too much about the remainder of the evening.

Omega General Help / Oh booger.....
« on: 22 February 2013, 20:26:00 »
The trusty steed has been sidelined pretty much for the past couple of months with only the occasional airing to keep things ticking over. Today was one such day.

Got a couple of suspicious little misfire/not happy hiccups on the way home from work and eventually threw the management light on after several flashes.

Car idles like a bag of spanners in a washing machine and quite down on power.

Did the pedal trick when I first got in and got 304. Just confirmed it by plugging the box of tricks.

Not lifted the bonnet yet but it looks like watching the rugby on the telly may get sidelined.

Ho Hum!!   :(

General Car Chat / GM V6 engines used as stationary engines?
« on: 23 January 2013, 20:30:54 »
Was chatting to a mechanic friend today for the first time in years and we got talking engines, as you do.

He shared a tale of a v6 vectra engined police car that had a replacement engine fitted from a recognised remanufacturer - vega, if memory serves?- and car had a horrendous flat spot before bursting into life. Done all the fault code things, checked vacuum connections, timing setup etc etc all to no avail.

After much buggering about it was found that the crank sensor was physically in the wrong location in the block compared to others examined.

Turns out that the remanufacturer company sourced bare engines/blocks worldwide and seems that some GM v6's like ours are used in the US for stationary engine water pumping duties out in the boonies. They run at a constant set of revs and only have oil and plug etc maintenance as required but need the timing optimised for a constant rev setup rather than in a car, hence alternate timing position.

Apparently

Anyone any knowledge able to confirm or deny??

Thread blatantly robbed from another forum I frequent.   :-[

I know its probably more suitable to 'general car chat' but, in all honestly, I think the thread will have more of a life here.

So.  Apart from the obligatory opal fruits under the rear seats (I'm sure they get put there on the assembly line) whats all been found in your car purchases?

Those that break cars on here might be finding more than most of us and be at an advantage..... :)   :)

General Discussion Area / Stuff on telly you simply just 'watch'
« on: 04 January 2013, 23:21:49 »
Flipping through the channels when L went upstairs to bed and I still have malt in my glass, I discover Band of Brothers on. Yet again. Despite having the full box set I still sit and watch, simply as in my opinion, its worth it.

Anyone else got a 'cant avoid' telly prog whilst channel hopping just before bedtime ?

General Discussion Area / Police contact - non emergency calls
« on: 03 January 2013, 22:52:12 »
There's a thing ongoing up here at the moment whereby an idea has been floated (by a local police federation rep no less) that 999 calls are to be charged at a premium (50p a pop?) rate rather than free as is at the mo.

In my opinion and experience we have shot our collective selves in the foot with the drive towards call centres and efficiency in that local folks no longer know the number for the local nick and can't be arsed with the 0845whatever (only 50 pee a minute.... ) one.

Plus, call centre peeps do not know local names for roads, junctions, people or whatever and valuable time is lost in trying to ascertain the truth if the matter.

As a result the 999 system gets overloaded with the assorted run out of bog paper/dog got a temperature/some shit on Facebook called me a knob/neighbours parked outside in my parking space shit or similar.

Bottom line - would you prefer free or charged 999 calls?

...... and discuss.. :)
