General Discussion Area / Today's the day!
« on: 12 December 2006, 11:22:42 »
Well, thats it.....

My DVLA enforced passenger status is now over and I can get to drive my own car again!!  Don't get me wrong, its been OK to be chauffeured about but it is annoying to see your pride and joy driven in a way you would't do yourself.

To me, brake pads are cheaper than gearboxes so I tend to allow the car to slow gracefully when approaching a hazard then gently applying the brakes and gently easing them off again, to avoid the 'rocking horse' style of driving.

The track of the car allows you to straddle speed humps and gently rise over and down the other side.

My wife, however, does not.  She hammers up to junctions relying on the power of the brakes, keeps the brakes on when hitting (and I mean HITTING ) speed humps with one side of the car or the other, then off brakes, using them like a lightswitch.  And using the gearbox like an alternate braking system.

I know the suspension arms are due for replacement (bought them the week before I had my attack) but they really need doing now!

General Discussion Area / Blue bins and a blustery wet day....
« on: 12 December 2006, 10:59:18 »
As I've been pretty much marooned in the house the past few weeks (not allowed to drive again until today - yippee   :y  ) I have given the paper shredder a good bashing and cleared out the cupboard most of us have where paper records going back years and years are kept....  The shredder box needed emptying quite a few times, I can tell you!!

Today is bin day around my way.

We are all 'greenified' by local council instruction with seperate wheelie bins for garden stuff (brown bin) paper (blue bin) and general household (grey bin)  It alternates weekly between grey and blue.  Today is blue bin day.

Bin placed around the front of the house as normal at the rear of my Omega where all the other bins are placed for the binmen to empty.

Just looked outside to find that three bins have been tipped over, mine included.  And the wind has emptied mine of paper shreddings (did I say I had the super dooper shredder that chops it up into fine chips, rather than strips?) all over the street.  And my black 'Meega.  As its been p*ss*ng down the past couple of days, everything is soaking and my car looks like an extra from a cheap Hollywood winter scene.   >:(  As does the front of my driveway.   >:(

Not chuffed.......    :D

Hope it dries soon and I can get it swept up, before its dragged in on shoes and into the house.....

Bah!!  Humbug!!    ;D

General Discussion Area / Double posting and ressurecting old posts
« on: 12 December 2006, 11:09:33 »
Dunno if its possible to do, but hows about a tab on the threads where you can see if you have already posted in a thread?

Wont make too much odds in the longer, regular, posts but may allow easy recognition in the likes of the welcome posts?

Just a thought...

General Discussion Area / Whats a 'J' turn?
« on: 06 December 2006, 16:17:53 »
For Tunnie and others who commented on the thread in the Gallery pages when Jim had a few playaway days at Hendon recently and wanted to see what a 'J' turn is, heres a link to a youtube page that shows it from the inside.

Easier in an auto, more skill involved in a manual!!

How to do a J turn

Caveat - I do not condone nor encourage anyone to try this without proper training.  If it goes wrong, your insurance will not pay out.  And someone could get seriously and/or permanently hurt.     :y

Here is where you learn such things outwith employers such as the Police service.

PS - at least the first ones a Vauxhall  ;D

Dear Santa,

I have been a good girl all year, and the only thing I ask for is peace and joy in the world for everybody!

Love, Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Your parents smoked ganja when they had you, didn't they?

Santa

****************************************

Dear Santa,

I don't know if you can do this, but for Christmas, I'd like for my mummy and daddy to get back together. Please see what you can do.

Love, Teddy

Dear Teddy,

Look, your dad's banging the babysitter like a road breaking drill bit driver well into double overtime. Do you think he's going to come back to your frigid mum who whinges constantly? It's time to give up that dream. Let me send you some Lego instead.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

I want a new bike, a Wii gamebox, a train, an Action Man, a dog, a drum kit, a pony and a tuba.

Love, Francis

Dear Francis,

Who names their kid "Francis" nowadays. I bet you're gay.   I'll set you up with a Barbie.

Santa

********************************

Dear Santa,

I left milk and biscuits for you under the tree, and I left carrots for your reindeer outside the back door.

Love, Susan

Dear Susan,

Milk gives me the shits and carrots make the deer fart in my face when riding in the sleigh.

You want to do me a favour? Leave me a bottle of Scotch.

Santa

************************************

Dear Santa,

What do you do the other 364 days of the year? Are you busy making toys?

Your friend, Thomas

Dear Thomas,

All the toys are made in China. I have a flat in Brighton where I spend most of my time making low-budget porno films. I unwind by drinking myself silly and squeezing the arses of cocktail waitresses while losing money at the poker table.

Well, you wanted to know.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

Do you see us when we're sleeping, do you really know when we're awake, like in the song?

Love, Jessica

Dear Jessica,

Are you really that gullible? Good luck in whatever you do. I'm skipping your house.

At first glance, the paper specs of this dont seem all that bad....

Range      200 – 240 miles

Top Speed      120 mph

Then theres the rest of the spec....

Charge rate      30 minutes for 20 – 50 miles
Full Charge      2 hrs (fast), 5 hrs (normal)
Electric Propulsion
Drive system      120 kW, 220 Nm, 13,000 rpm
Regenerative braking
Innovative Lead Cobalt Battery made with Lead-Foam grids by Apollo Energy Systems, Inc.
Charger      Onboard, plug in anywhere,
Up to 20 kW

OK, its an electric City car sort of thing.....  Whats the price?

US$49,000 - available in the third quarter of 2008

Pricey and, with shipping, could be out of my financial reach.  Whats it look like then?

General Discussion Area / An interesting couple of weeks....
« on: 02 December 2006, 21:10:14 »
Howdoo all.
Been away for a few weeks due to enforced circumstances - anyone else fancy a heart attack at 48  :'(  - and by jove, been a fair bit of change hereabouts!!

Took me ages to log in though.....  Had to reformat my PC from scratch and reinstall everything.  (Nothing to do with the site, the PC went t*ts up whilst in hospital) and then I tried to log on to OOF.  Apart from forgetting my password, it appears that TB and others have been playing silly buggers and had to set up the place again after a hosting issue.  Got there eventually (July was a good month then, but please TB, delete the user 'Guffer' that I had to create to log in with....

when I eventually get here, I find......

MickDundee giving lessons to the heathen on how to speak the Chosen Language of The Few....
Mark turning in his explod estate to a car ramp (glad your OK Mark, sheet steel is easier to replace than flesh and blood)
TB deciding to replace the Commodore 64 with a 386 at long last ( Joking - must have been a fair bit of grief, glad you managed on our collective behalf)
Gods, knights, intermediates, experts - I've lost the plot! Whats next?
Tunnie - had his keyboard fingers cut and shut, now back to a newbie! Thats what happens when you dis the mods and admins, matey!

Ah well.  Back tae auld claes and parrich whilst wading through the glaur left ahint o' a wheen o' posts clappit oan here since 14th November...

OK

This has been covered a few times before but, given the problems that our resident computer literate Spanner Twirlers (The Boy and N.E One Else) has keeping the site afloat, its perhaps time to raise it once again.

I know and remember in part the reasons for the migration that created this site from its previous incarnation.

We mainly agree with the ethos that info is and should be free.

Further, I have also recently experienced a fair splat of problems, like others, with viewing this site over the past few days and, like others, initially blamed my ISP (BTInternet) and reinstalled software like a token sacrificial Bill Gates programmer, to no avail....

But....

If it means parting with a few sheckels to assist in the funding of hard/software to keep the site going, I would be more than willing to put my hand into my electronic pocket to assist.  I cannot provide any computer technical knowledge (already said where my strengths lie) but would willingly pay for the continued entertainment (and educational) value this site provides.

It is appreciated that I will probably be ripped to bits for, yet again, suggesting a membership fee but if thats one way to readily assist then, to me, no problem.

And longer term, could allow us trade Club status in our own right (after the year etc) rather than shell out elsewhere?   :-/

Just my tuppence......

General Discussion Area / LPG kit for an MV6

Apart from the obvious missing tank and fitting certificate, what else would be needed to add to this to convert a 3 ltr to LPG?

ebay lpg link thingy

Was prompted by the other thread regarding fuel consumption and, as I have a boring day stuck at home today, I'm browsing the web kinda randomly.

A previous trade of mine was diesel engines.  BIG diesel engines....

Check out the following quote, if you think less than 20 is to the gallon is poor.

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98".  Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower.  Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Some facts on the 14 cylinder version:
Total engine weight: 2300 tons  (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)
 Length: 89 feet
 Height: 44 feet
Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm
 Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption).  Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour.  At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency.  That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion.
For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.

Even at it's most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.

Clicky link ------>   most powerfull diesel engine ever

Given that the ship will travel circa 350 miles per day, that works out at roughly 0.21 miles to the gallon....  Thats not a displaced decimal.  Point two one miles per gallon   :o  Thats about 370 feet.

MarkieC - your consumptions not to bad matey!!

As above.  Posted also in the wanted section, but did not want to clog it with the speil as follows.

23 year old daughter bought a first car of a Rover 111 Kensington.  Her choice.  Tidy car but not enough metalwork for my liking.  She has a daily commute of 50+ miles and return along a fast and busy A road to do a post grad Teaching course for the next year.

Was at a fatal crash today on the road she uses daily where a similar car to hers was obliterated by a Merc and narrowly missed becoming a mushroom cloud on a petrol station forecourt.  It spoiled the day of a few people, myself included, and makes me want to get a stronger car for her to use.  She drives sensibly, but not everyone on this road does.....

The question.

Anyone assist with an older Meega TD, spec not important, condition within reason also not important, but with a reliable diesel that will clock up loads of miles over the next year?

I'm not looking for any sympathy vote, just explaining my reasons why.

As always, cheaper is better but a fair price of hundreds, not thousands, anticipated.

thanks
