exhaust MOT failure ?
« on: 10 August 2017, 13:14:29 »

As expected my 2003 2.2 petrol estate has just failed its MOT on exhaust.

Major leaks on central and rear back boxes.

They quoted £416 for the work, I have taken the car away and just wondered what my best options are now, bearing in mind its not something I can do myself, is it worth just doing the two boxes or is it best to replace whole thing?
All advice gratefully received thank you.

ps. Dr Gollum where are you?

 :)

You can get the parts for less than a £100. and provided the nuts that join the downpipe to centre section release (unlikely) it shouldn't be much of a problem as someone somewhere should be able to do it for a reasonable price.

£416 on what exactly?

You can get an exhaust for £75 on eBay, which is better in quality than most garages flog. Either DIY fit or find a good local chap to fit for an hours labour  :y

£416 was supply and fit,  just had another quote for £340.

Is it the kind of thing you would do Al if I got the bits? much rather pay you than pay the garage but its obviously a much easier job if you don't have to lay on your back to do it!

I will order the bits you recommend anyway and thanks for the link.

I just got a rear silencer box for my 2003 2.2 fitted for £55 from Ablefit in Bristol. They did a cracking job as well. Phone around if you can't do it your self.

Just a heads up for anyone who has the same problem.

I got  the exhaust as recommended by Doctor Gollum, ordered it from Poland on Monday morning and received it on the following Monday.
Cost was £85+ £11 postage for complete exhaust,  Looked to be decent quality, not sure how they can ship so much weight all this way  for that money, but very pleased with price.
Had it fitted by local Indie garage for £99, so whole thing cost me £195.
I was quoted £416  and £370 supply and fit by 2 other garages so by just asking a couple of questions on this amazing forum I have saved a nice packet.
Also got another years MOT as well.

Thank you guys    :y :y

Hopefully be it for a while, as you've covered the typical Omega stuff in the year or so that you've had it :y

The 2.0 exhausts fit the 2.2s too, are simpler, cheaper and easier to fit. I never understood why GM changed them.
