Windows XP Pro 32 Q
« on: 12 September 2017, 18:50:17 »

Just setting this up on the Toughbook, it's a genuine retail SP2 and I have installed it onto a brand new 120GB hard drive.

Given my intended use of it and the fact that it is no longer supported, should I select Automatic Updates or not?

(RAM will be receiving a 1GB update as soon as it arrives, if that has any bearing...)

XP offers broader diagnostic compatability... (although Carsoft V12 will run on Windows 10) ;)

Switch it off, get all the available updates and install them manually.  There may be small security related updates in the future (depending on MS's generosity) but unlikely.  Once it is fully installed image it and save that somewhere safe so that you have a fallback state in the event of loss/failure.

Never connect it to the web though unless you enjoy chasing your tail while hunting and killing malware.

What Guffers says - XP SP3, all possible updates via a USB stick or similar, disable Wifi and NIC in BIOS.
