My new turfed area is coming along very nicely, it’s been down a week now. Had to water it daily for a couple of days, but we’ve had a bit of rain every day and has noticibly grown.
What’s the view on if/when I should cut it before winter sets in? When does grass stop growing over the winter? So many questions I know .
I’m going to need a lawnmower soon as well.
Nowt in any book about this, as nature will do what it wants .. if it's growing .... trim it, if it's not growing ... leave it.
Do NOT cut it too short in the winter as that encourages moss and weeds, I aim for twice as long as summer cut , so around 20-30 mm in winter.
Always brush worm casts away before cutting as the mower will simply "pancake" the cast into a muddy lump that smothers the grass and, again, encourages moss & weeds.
Cut when dry not wet, and don't cut if a frost is forecast within 24 hours..... this allows the cut end of the grass to "seal" before frost damage can occur.
If you don't cut it and it gets long, you will have hard, yellow stems when you do cut it, so keep trimming as needed to keep a soft, luxurious sward.
