Photobucket and pictures..
« on: 24 October 2017, 10:55:46 »

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-hotlink-fix/kegnjbncdcliihbemealioapbifiaedg?hl=en

An extension to Chrome that will make all those disappeared Photobucket pictures visible once more - handy on forums that host their images there.

Similar exists for Firefox, as I know some here are Chrome-phobic ;)

trouble is that even with this "fix" those bloody pop-up adverts are still making it almost impossible to use this site! :(

Lizzie, this site?  There are NO adverts in OOF,

If you have adverts, run every malware / virus scanner you can find!

why anyone would want to continue using photobucket, with or without a hack, whether it works or not, after they way they behaved amazes me. God forbid anyone has actually paid them.

https://imgbb.com/ seems good instead

All free hosting services will die, as its unaffordable without revenue stream.

Standard rules apply, hook the user, then charge. Those that piss off, well, good riddance, as they were costing you money

there are plenty of free services that look very likely to stay free and offer more than just image hosting - blogger, wordpress, gmail, yahoo mail, google sites, google maps, google earth to name just a few.  yes some may come and go (google sites may go) but the 'standard rules' have changed and this is a permanent change - they make money from the data they receive from you such as what you host and post.

or even

Nobody has yet found a way to make sufficient money out of mining images. So, no, until someone does, free image hosting will never survive. It's a very easy way to burn cash very fast. And business plans need to demonstrate where the revenue will come from in order to secure any investment

And for your info, SMF have alternative streams to pay their hosting costs, including subscriptions and inline ads.

That isn't mining the images, nor is it hosting them. That's just part of their search portfolio.

Go and ask mummy and daddy how the internet works, and also how business works. Once you have absorbed that useful understanding, report back :y

I never said it was hosting images, it is making money out of images though.

Nobody ever said it was not possible to make money out of images.  Christ, I have far too many acquaintances who have made a fortune out of images.

The context of this discussion was image hosting, and its viability. You suggested that is was viable, as the hosts could somehow get revenue from it, to which I suggested (with insider knowledge) that free hosting was not a long term business.

You drive people to distraction. In fact you're impossible to deal with.

I don't see it as winning or losing a discussion (as a discussion is just that, not something to be won or lost).  I see it as you're talking crap (again), and I feel I'm obliged to have to correct what you are incorrectly claiming.

personally i think you're an idiot on many topics (eg ebay or gaybay as you call it, pollen filter clips etc...) but i don't point it out explicitly as you try to do.  i just say why i don't agree.

fact remains that there are many sites doing free image hosting and they're not charities and they're still in business.  photobucket pulled out of the free market this happens in business all the time doesn't mean all those remaining don't see it as profitable in the long run, which i think it is.

Doing anything for 'free' always has a cost, so you either have adverts to pay for any given service, ie Youtube, or you pay to not have adverts, ie Photobucket.

Without adverts or paid usage, then you are into the territory of places like OOF... which operates at a loss in order to remain true to its original purpose.

Anyone offering a free service on a commercial basis is doing so in order to drive growth in other significant revenue areas... no such thing as a free lunch and all that ::)

It can be profitable if visitors and users go to your website, due to ad revenue. Where that image is predominantly used in other webpages of another site, where is the revenue?

This is becoming more of a problem, so there are 2 options to keep the venture alive - charge membership, or block the image being used off-site.

But I understand I'm wasting my time with you as you can't seem to understand the costs involved, and clearly think that everything on the internet should be free.

Indeed, as no business in the commercial field can operate long term without making a profit.  That is why they are in business, not to make you happy without a heathy bottom line ;)

Technically, many can survive if they are close to breaking even.

But making regular heavy losses, its very, very difficult to get extra investment when the cash runs out. Even more so when you can't show a viable plan to offer some kind of return on any investment.
