Is the Streetwise OBD11 code reader any use to us or just a waste of money?

When you say 'us' it wont do all Omega's, should work ok on post 2001 Petrols, so your looking at the 2.6, 3.2 and some 2.2's,  it will be a simple Code Reader and Code Reseter, thats about it.

Depending on budget you can get cheapo ODB2 Bluetooth Dongles +Mobile App for around 5 quid that will do the same,if not more, but the Bluetooth connection can be a bit challenging to pair to the ECU on some of them.

Your car is OBD compliant, so it's easier than a paperclip, remembering how to count and looking up the codes. But if you are going to buy an OBD device, get one that reads live data.
