Thank you Serek
« on: 16 November 2017, 17:12:31 »

Popped down to Huntingdon to see the main man and buy myself some lovely new returned headlights.

As I was so chuffed at the clear lenses I omitted to see the HID ballast box attached to it.

Got back to NOOF land, leccy at work wired them in for me, so now I have awesome fog free HIDs.

Cheers mate  :y :y :y

If you have HiD's is it not also a legal requirement to have headlamp washers? Or have the rules altered on this?

Yes you need washers, legally and also just generally. The way light output can increase after a good blast is considerable!

You're correct. However the tester can't measure light output so he'd look for the maximum (lumens?) number on the headlight and fail it if it's over a certain number (2500?). If though your new headlights don't have aforementioned number......

Sorry just to mention that's from a mot POV. I'm unsure if plod were to pull me over. Though I think they'd be more interested in the dead bodies I carry round in the boot  :-[

Sorry just to mention that's from a mot POV.....

Seems a bit of a grey area.  :-\

VOSA says:

"Lighting

Products on the lens or light source that obviously reduce the light's intensity or change its colour are now a reason for failure.
HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high. Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted the tester will check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices fitted."

Soooo, does that mean that they can only fail it if the self levellers and washers don't work 'where fitted', but if they are not fitted they have nothing to test apart from the 2000 lumens.   :-\

That's my understanding....which they have no ability to test. Thus they'd look for the lumens output written on the unit. But if that figure isn't there there's no reason for failure

Grey area aside, having HIDs on 3.2 I can see benefit of washers.

So, now you have HID’s with no levellers fitted, you can drive around blinding people.

Was nice to see you Steve.
I did not know you don't have factory fitted xenon lights
At least you see where you going

If they adjusted at mot station to right level then won't be any issues

Until Webby puts more dead people in the boot ;)

As washers are a trivial retrofit, I would consider that an absolute minimum.  The headlight levelling setup is more of a pain to retrofit.

Agreed. The hardest part of retro fitting washers nowadays is finding  someone with the set up for sale.
