Hotel wifi and iPad2
« on: 17 November 2017, 16:15:37 »

Currently staying in a hotel and my iPad is running much, much quicker than it does at home.

Speed test shows 2mbps in hotel whereas at home I have 70mbps which Speed test shows being delivered at 47mbps over wifi. I was considering changing my iPad2 for a newer, faster version but it may be the wifi delivery from my Virgin Media Superhub2 that's causing the lag.

My litmus test was the Argos site. Hotel : loads and runs quickly. At home : iPad freezes and renders the site and similar picture heavy ones , impossible to use.

Your thoughts please ?

My sky router is also shite. It’s getting 39Mbs down the line (proven with a wired connection) and I’m supposed to be getting 20Mbs WiFi (according to a speed test). But it keeps dropping out and is really slow at times. Every time I put the iPad down, it drops it’s connection to the router and I have to ‘fiddle’ with it.

I must say I have none of those problems with BT Infinity.

My iPad even works outside and downstairs of my flat. ;)

Yep. That’s my next move, when I’ve finished my 19 year contract with sky  ;D

47Mbps is not unreasonable off wifi. Better than I can achieve off my top end 1200Mbps stuff, due to the hostile area I'm in

I recently binned SKY interweb because it was shite. Went for BT fibre, only to find out it is even more shite.  ::)
Don't know if living in a far corner of rural Webs End is anything to do with it.  :-\
Must find out what they use at work, because my laptop works as I want it to at work.

I agree, I just don't understand why my iPad doesn't freeze on this hotel's slow wifi but is so frustratingly clonky on my VM 47Mbps wifi, I want to throw it out the window. I just don't get it ?

Thanks John but that's not an upgrade for all, only for those who have very old equipment and have been invited by VM to upgrade for free. I've asked VM for a SH3 and they wanted more cash.... Told them to poke it !

After a bit more rummaging around the Internet, I might have to buy a better router and attach it to my current VM one.

If a local mong has pissed around with their wifi config, you will be severely impacted.

Is it just shite on wifi, or when cabled as well.

Also, can you define "shite"

Havent tried cable option. Will give it a go some time soon. Shite, as in internet constantly drops out some days or is very slow. Other days it seems ok.

Defo worth, as a short term test, using a cable.  That'll prove whether or nor its the wifi or not.  Which will determine the next action :y
