You can get plastic grid squares to provide support whilst allowing grass or gravel surface

They don’t work on wet, muddy grass, only when it’s nice and dry. They just sink right in and your back to square one. Admittedly, I bought it on a roll and about half the thickness of that, but it had disappeared within a week.

those grids are similar to the ones i used when i converted the front garden into a 2 car drive a couple of years ago, filled with gravel, they work very well

those grid systems do work but it is absolutely critical to use the right sub base and work out drainage levels.  Neighbour of mine has the stuff set on non draining sub base in a clay field where it was lower than the surrounding field.  you can guess the result.

Thanks for that, Jonathan. My lawn is turf laid on Essex clay, no specific drainage allowed for, so it looks like I have a problem!
Maybe I should park on the road until I have saved enough pennies to get it block paved or concreted?

As the caravan moves less often than the car why not swap them around,kill the grass then a membrane and a couple of tons of chippings will stop grass coming back

I did consider that, Henry, but I np longer have a towbar and no way could I move it by hand, even with several strong blokes and my lawn slopes and is now slippery too!
If I did the lottery I could use my winnings to concrete it over buy a country mansion.....
