Going to need 4x new springs then. Rears cheap enough, but fronts could be pricey? Being in with all that FWD crap  :-\

I had a good look while the car was on the ramps.

It didn't fail on the exhaust itself but by next year I think it will. Eleven years old and original it can't last much longer.

No different to an Omega: two bolts to the hub carrier, droplink, undo the top mount and out it comes. The springs ought to be cheaper, as there's still loads of Vectras about.

The design of the spring is more of the problem rather than the state of the roads.

I hit one this morning and how the wheel survived I don't know. Third world roads....and unlikely to improve any time soon.

Sounds like it if he replaced springs last year as well.

Instead of taking the piss out of an impoverished  former Omega owner you should be arranging a whip round. :)

Anyway the price is in.

£192 plus VAT. Two hours of labour at £35+VAT.

Could be worse.

I'd say that's very reasonable......for Lincolnshire. In South Yorkshire, of course, that would be a months wages.

In the shop as I type.

An independent garage owned by a very helpful young couple. They still show signs of enthusiasm for the task rather than the 'leave the fu*cking thing there mate and we'll get round to it when we can be arsed' attitude of the dealers.

MOT is £35 everywhere around here. I've booked mine in for MOT and service on 5th April with a local indie who was recommended to me. Being a five minute walk away makes it very handy too. We shall see.

I really don't care what I pay for the test, it's the bastids who fail it so they can sell you the work that I despise.

All motorists are between a rock and a hard place.

Much of MOT testing is down to interpretation and opinion. If they are looking for business it is easy fro them to find something expensive to repair.

I shall be asking for my broken coil springs to be returned......just to check.

Normally those who charge significantly less than the maximum!

I go to a local "under the arches" type two-man-band garage. He charges the maximum (50 odd quid) but when you consider that it's getting on for a hour's labour these days, plus the investment in kit and training that is required to offer the service, I think that's fair.

He is also fair, because he's made his money charging for the test and doesn't have to find faults to try and drum up some repair work.

'Tis true'......or can be true.

But the unscrupulous have no qualms about charging the full test fee and finding lots of unnecessary work with which to fleece the customer.

I have used the same family business for MOT,s over the past 25 years and am now almost a family friend.

Cuppa when I arrive and a good chat with which of the 2 sons is tasked with the test.If ever anything requires attention I am fully advised with a full visual inspection of what is required, along with the usual comments of " I wish everybody looked after their cars as well as you do "..nice I think.

They, like Kevin,s place, make money from the test and basic service work.I am happy to pay the £40 its been since I can remember.

The mighty Signum returns with an MOT to 13th April 2019.

£232.20 plus £29.99 for the MOT........ So £262.19. :'(

I could buy up nearly all the remaining Omega in the world for that. :)

I was looking at Touareg's the other day .. I notice (new) you can spec a 100L fuel tank.

My first thought was "Christ, that would be eye watering to fill.." - I wonder if that has an impact on the shrinkage of tanks; fuel is more expensive and manufacturers don't want people wincing every time they fill their car? Then again, I imagine Jaguar owners have the butler do it so they'd never know...

The Jag has a pissy little tank. About 60 litres, I think.

It's probably a result of packaging/weight reduction...

Re proper tanks, on a large luxury vehicle, a relatively big tank is needed to provide an acceptable range... Important in places where the nearest shop is two hours away or your nearest neighbour is 200km away... Which is rather ironic considering that the target markets for such vehicles are affluent urban areas :D

Whilst about my business today, I was proceeding along a road in Lincolnshire, the traffic slowed briefly, my eyes were drawn to,what can only be hailed as a workers cottage, tucked away was a mighty signum, and a jaaaag, now was the lord visiting a cumly wench, or was this or lords "pile" there was also a couple of laptops strewn about the place..

I did give a cheerful blast on the horns. :D

I have been thinking about my comments on this thread and have realised that I owe Lord Opti an apology for calling his Mighty Signum an old shitter.  :-[

So I apologise M'lud, as I now think that you are right in that the Signum will become a modern classic.  :y

Much like the Vauxhall Belmont, Ford Orion or the Citroen BX!  :)

No that'll never be a classic and I've never made any claims otherwise.  My Mondeo is a comfy, pokey (for a DERV) hack that handles reasonably well for a FWD and is fairly cheap to run.  ;)  My BMW E39 however...  :y

The 5 litre V8 M5 version is rising in value. A fine car.

The 'Bangle BMW's' do nothing for me. Was it really necessary to make these car so Fugly?.
