Brake pedal
« on: 13 April 2018, 20:16:15 »

Bit of a strange question but if i heat the metal arm of a brake pedal could i get it hot enough with a plumbers torch. Secondly once and if i could bend it would the metal loose its strength.eg would it be brittle and not safe to use. Also what thickness would you make a wide brake pedal say 15cm wide when the brake arm will be at one end and not in the middle. I was thinking a 10mm drilled plate.

Seat of the pants engineering suggests your first two questions are no(you want the bend area to be cherry red), and don't worry about it.
But a 10mm thick plate pedal? I've never seen a brake pedal that wasn't curved(and don't want to use one) which dramatically reduces the required thickness; some flared holes and a formed edge in a 2mm thick pedal is likely to plenty strong enough. Have a look at a truck brake pedal for a realistic example of what you need. And ensure your welding is up to scratch :y

Cheers Nick. I was just thinking 10mm was a bit of overkill. But i want to be sure it wont bend or snap. So a 2mm thick piece will work ?

Yes if its formed,ie box section or similar, but not a flat piece of 2mm plate :y
