My computer won't go to sleep!
« on: 31 May 2018, 21:04:46 »

Ok, not a life-threatrning problem, but very annoying nonetheless.
Until fairly recently, when I pressed the "Sleep" button on my keyboard (Microsof Internet Keyboard), my PC obliged by going to sleep but retaining all open documents.Suddenly, it went into a major sulk and strared to snooze and then stalled, giving thew message "Preparing to Standby" and going no further.
Any ideas from the I.T squad, please?

Ron.

Sleep and Stand By is pretty much the same thing Ron, did you mean Hibernation (Save to Disk then Power Off)

No, not hibernation - I don't think? The keyboard button simply says "Sleep" and when it worked the PC made all of the usual closing-down noises, but retained all Data, so in the morning when I pressed the Mains "on" button, it returned to where I left it before we both went to bed!

Difficult to say re the Keyboard could be a number of things, setting have changed etc, you can program the  "What happens when I press the Power Button" ie, Shut Down, Sleep/Stand By, Hinbinate etc, that would be my first call, in Setting Power Management or what ever is called this week, set to Sleep, then see if it work when you press the Button briefly, it will work or say something like something is preventing your machine to sleep etc. if it works then that will tell you its not a Sleep issue, but something to do with Keyboard, Drivers settings etc, if it doesn't work it may tell you why?

Ok, I think I got that; I'll try it on something unimportant tomorrow.
Thanks, Zirk.  :y

In win7 or 8 it will be in -  Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Power Options / System Settings

In Win10, depending what ver you have it will be something like - Settings / System / Power and Sleep / Additional Power Settings

theres a "When I press the Power Button" for that Option, also check, there should be "When I Press the Sleep Button" so see what that is set to

Should be in Control Panel similar to 7.

I wont bore about XP, as you've probably heard it all before, but you really need to address that as your open to all sorts of potential risks.   ;)

Yep, TB and others have kicked my arse made disparaging remarks about my OS! When fewer people stop making demands on my pension, I will upgrade.

Usual reason for not going to sleep is driver related, although apps can also stop it.

XP lacks some of the more advanced tools for tracing, but nobody is daft enough to use XP :P. Not sure its work wasting time on TBH.

Need to ascertain what sleep its going into:

S3/Suspend to RAM (STR) - faster to sleep and to wake, but power must not be removed from PC, as it needs to provide a small amount of power to keep the RAM refreshed
S1/Hibernate/Suspend to Disk - slower to sleep/wake, but power can be removed, as the volatile data is copied to the disk.

S3 is the hardest of the 2 for the PC to achieve, particularly on older machines running older software.

But, honestly, that PC needs replacing.  Don't you have a family member throwing out an older Win7 PC?  What spec if the PC, can't it be upgraded to a later OS?

Don't beat about the bush, TB, come right out with it - you think my PC is outdated crap, right?
I WILL upgrade (honest!), when funds allow, but there are other priorities for my disposable income (pension) to consider first.  :(

Yes, scrap it.  It could run Win7 "OK-ish", esp if you popped in an SSD, but you're looking at £30 for the SSD (120Gb) and £60 for the Win7 licence.  So £80 down, and still an old P4 sat there trying to make your leccy meter spin faster.

Its the only time I get to surf OOF ;)

Back to specs, this laptop is a Core2 Duo 2Ghz, 2Gb RAM, 965 chipset and graphics, 240Gb SSD, Windows 10 (1803) Pro.

It runs OK-ish for most browsing tasks and general office work, and actually is my laptop I pick up to do most stuff, despite having a newer early i5 Lenovo and a PoS top end 2017 MacBook Pro.

Webpages with lots of embedded ads, like egay (or the Jag forums - all of them), make it stutter loading webpages though. That's just shear lack of grunt.

Yes, scrap it
I disagree
yes, find another computer for internet etc ,
BUT , the old XP machine would be good air gap diagnostic machine ,add a cheap obd2 scan tool and bore scope etc

ex corporate core 2 duo with 4GB of ram ,windows 10 desktop can be had on ebay very cheap (cheaper than buying win7  :-\ )
good enough to watch youtube video, browse forums ,check emil
I doubt Bigron is wanting to play the latest games or encode vydeo etc

something like this

I believe the OPs machine is a desktop (actually, given its a Scenic, I know it is - the Fushitsu Scenic is a particularly shit machine, even 15yrs ago ;)), so not ideal.

So, its a worthwhile idea, but probably not for what the OP has.

I myself have an XP laptop (Dell Latitude D505) with the Wifi adapter removed (so no mong can re-enable it) that's used for Testbook (a particularly fussy diags platform, that takes over the entire PC). I have another XP laptop (HP 6820s) that's used for SDD (another particularly fussy diags platform, that takes over the entire PC and doesn't coexist well with other stuff).

I got a really old XP Lappy with a Square'al Screen, like you Ive diss'ed the Wifi, I use it purely for Programming modern 2018 spec Trunked Radios, as its the only machine I have left (I really have tried hard to find another) that will talk to the Radios using a real Comm Port with a simple RS232 Lead, nothing else will do, USB Emulation or not, problem is the Machine really is on its last legs, but it is what it is.  >:( ::)

It looks to have PS/2 ports, which will match OPs stuff, though I'd still go for something newer and buy a cheap USB keyboard/mouse set for a fiver...

...but if costs really are that tight, it would do the job...  ...slowly.
