As of yesterday.......
« on: 02 October 2018, 12:29:17 »

.......I'm mortgage free. :y

The best the bastards would offer me was 4.74%. I wanted 2.5% or less.

It's a fair old chunk of change I had to come up with as the mortgage had 8 years to run (2026) but I console myself with the fact I'll save thousands in interest and have an additional £850 each month to squander. :D

Nice feeling though.

Now what can I waste £850 on each month....... ::)

It's equivalent to saving over seventy grand in an account paying 4.74% interest for eight years. Except........there is no tax to pay on the interest.

Absolutely. When we moved a few years ago had surplus cash after selling London house. Bought a flat in London as well as house in Wales. The flat has been better than any investment would have been, even allowing for CGT if/when I sell.

Definitely , sold all our rental properties now & bought our dream house cash, never thought we would ever be in this position 30 years ago .All started with an inheritance of just over £50,000 in 1987 just very lucky, didn't listen to any financial advisers all seem slippery buggers to me just used commonsense & a very good accountant .

I was too young at the time but I always liked the Mk1 Escort twin cam. This car had the same engine  as the Lotus Cortina and Lotus Elan.

Pretty rare these days and worth a lot of money. :y

Yep.....I remember that.  It was abolished in the nineties.

It was called MIRAS. 'Mortgage interest relief at source'..... :y

In my experience wealthy people pay little tax. Tax such as VAT on petrol and food hits the poor far more than the rich.

In the 1980's, I understand that my dad got tax relief on his mortgage, while also being NT coded (not normally resident for tax purposes) - so he actually got a cheque back from the revenue every year.  :y
