Seems they drove at least 2 or 3 miles, surely they could have stopped on hard shoulder?

Not withstanding all the pikey comments .. well used to them by now ... I struggle to understand how ANYONE ends up "accidentally" on the wrong side .... all the exit junctions (which would have become an "entry") are deliberately designed to make it extremely difficult to turn on "incorrectly". ... tight turns, angled roads, high kerbs, etc etc

I believe the concept is called "passive design" and is a major part of all road planning, and has been for many years. IIRC, there was even a load of "retrospective" work done on many junctions that were not originally designed that way.

Ah, but has the M40 still got a hard shoulder and not converted to a smart motorway?

I seem to remember when I last went in that direction it was being 'converted'.

How do people drive the wrong way though on any motorway!  Have met them a few times though in my driving career ::) ::)

That's all standard motorway, none of the M40 is going smart. M4 is....

Hopefully the crash destroyed the caravan, one less on the road.  :)

Looks like a Hyundai .. Terracan maybe? Jimmy....

The same(ish) stretch was at a standstill this morning (northbound, I was going southbound) after another big shunt. Won't be long until it's made "Smart" to stop these kinds of incidents*

*that's sarcasm, btw.

That's all standard motorway, none of the M40 is going smart. M4 is....

Which I'm pretty sure is why it's quicker for me to detour 20 miles across Silverstone and come down the M40 (unsmart) than it is to drive down the M1 (smart)..

Blind panic probably :'(

At least he's in the left lane ( to him) and not traveling that fast*.

Obviously any speed against the traffic is too fast, but appears to be a result of utter confusion rather than malice... And just goes to show that even normal people freeze up when they find themselves in a situation that they can't quite believe.

The front seat passenger must have been going bananas...

Fortunately nobody was killed.

..............and the report states "The driver and passenger [of the errant car and caravan], both in their 80s, and the driver of the Ford Mondeo who was in his 30s, died in the accident."

So it looks like some silly old sod became confused??  I will now stop complaining about the 3 year licence review I get as a diabetic, with a medical this year to test my "fitness to drive"!!  But there again everyone over 70 gets a licence review now every three years anyway, so it just proves that does not guarantee everyone's fitness to drive.

Sad about the three deaths :'( :'(

Maybe, but just because they MAY be non-residents of the UK does not mean they are not subject to medical assessment in their mother country in line with EU policy.

But it's not enforced. Both my mum (89) and dad (86) still have their driving licenses, and neither have ever been assessed. It seems you just apply to renew your license, and 99.99% of the time DVLA just re-issue it. None of my elderly relatives (and I've got about 20) have ever been asked to do anything to retain their licenses past 70. So providing your doctor doesn't stick his/her oar in, and you don't have too many prangs.....

I don't think my Mum, 82, has ever done more than reapply (bar the courses and fines etc for being a naughty girl).

But then, my dear old mum is a better driver than most I encounter on the road.

You jest, but the stupid handheld ones can easily get the wrong direction after stopping for any reason, eg traffic, and won't correct until its convinced of direction of movement.  During this time, it can give duff instructions.  They should be banned.

Indeed, at the time I posted, nobody knew what had happened. We'll all be old one day (some of us already are), so I take back the shooting.

Sat nav did try to have me go the wrong way down what I suspect might have been a one way street, yesterday, detouring through St Albans to avoid carnage on the M1. But, not being a blithering idiot, I ignored it and took notice of the road markings, instead.

I took the ROSPA advanced driving test a few years ago to make sure I was still up to scratch (and passed).

Taken a couple of refreshers since then as well.

I think I will know when I'm too old to drive (hopefully).

Reaction times are obviously not as good as when I was in my 20's, but I drive accordingly.

So, if I'm not breaking the speed limit on an empty road, and you come up behind me - then up yours :D

I believe the concept is called "passive design" and is a major part of all road planning, and has been for many years. IIRC

I agree Nige but, strangely in this case, if you are on the flyover on Ibstone Road near Stokenchurch, you can turn down the M40 exit quite easily from either direction. Against two massive No Entry signs i grant you. Very sad outcome all the same.

Thanks for that... as I don't frequent or know the area it might explain things ... wonder why that particular junction remains "unmodified" ....  a point for the coroner to raise if that is a part of the reason behind this unfortunate sequence of events ??  ...  :(

EDIT:

Just google earthed that junction and I see what you mean !! Not a roundabout to be seen just simple junctions...  ... not good passive design at all...

you can almost imagine the "turn right (or left) in 200 yards" and the right (or left) turn arrows on the screen command being misinterpreted  and the early turn happening .....

Junction 20B A12 southbound is another one which is easy to get onto in the wrong direction if you don't know it. A woman and her children were killed doing this several years ago. Although the signage is better now than it was then.

Perhaps he made a conscious decision to stop the vehicle and potentially save everyone behind...

Often wonder what I would do in that scenario... Quite often pull up behind people reversing off the M23  at the gatwick exit
