Take the key, turn it 90 degrees to the normal insertion way, whack the grey biscuit part of the barrel a few times. If that doesn't free it off, try again. If that doesn't work try turning the key whilst pulling in one or the other direction on the steering wheel.

Try putting some graphite (pencil lead will do) on the key. It sometimes helps.

If the key is in position one, remove the shroud, and insert a 4 mm Allen key into the hole underneath the barrel. It should pop out.

If you remove any keyring attached to the key, the shroud should be able to be persuaded over the key for access  :y

Squirt any old lube down the keyhole, remove the fob from your key, put the chip somewhere safe, put key in and get some light  tension on it with pliers/grips then tap the middle of the key with a light hammer, such as a tack hammer and the key should turn to aid barrel removal

The barrel was jammed solid. Hernebay locks came out today after me calling them yesterday. They got the old barrel out and fitted  the one I purchased at GM. Great job.Now onto getting the drivers door to open.

If the ignition barrel is getting stiff, it's worthwhile removing it while you still can, stripping it and cleaning it. One more job that does not need doing in a car's first 10 years, but needs it in the next.

What rotten luck. I had a Senator getting stiff, then one day it would not turn at all so I could not turn to position 1 to remove it. No locksmith would touch it, so I put drills down the middle of the lock until it suddenly fell to bits and I could turn it with a screwdriver. Now when a lock stiffens I take the cylinder out, take in indoors, strip it and clean it. There is a forum guide, it's a fun job.

before the locksmith came a certain recovery man tried to turn the key without success and damaged the insert. The locksmith said this is the first that he had seen snapped off.
