An unsuccessful day

Well, today, me and Omegas aren't seeing eye to eye :(

Tunnie brought his 2.2 round for an oil change, but we couldn't get sump plug out. We decided not to force it off until we had a new one. So thats been put off until next week.

Bobf brought his 2.5 around - been having an ongoing issue with speedo (now fixed), ABS and TC. Current prob is ABS and TC lights are on.  Plugged in Tech2, and please to see a DTC stored (OSF sensor). Cleared the code, hoping that would clear the lights, but no.  OK, do a actuator test, and manually control the telltales. ECU says they are off, but they are on. ECU shagged I suspect :(

I was going to do my fuel filter today, but with the 'midas touch' I have today, I think I'll put it off....

The oil change was a bit dispointing, but I did get a nice new Carbon pollen filter and a new air filter, some !"&^%£" of mechanic put the wrong one in mine!! So it had about a half inch gap to the side of the filter.

Feels a bit smoother now with the new airfilter less "stuffy" at low revs.

Many thanks to TheBoy for giving me that airfilter which should have been going to an eBay customer!  ;)

I know a little more history about it than I let on ;)

But ECU said light was off, but clearly on....

Bet the cheapo tech2 would reset the light.......you wanna thro yours away (in my direction of course   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] ) and get a cheapo one  ;)

Fuel filters a piece of piddle to change, i don't no what all the fuss is about! As for the sump nut, just use a bit of elbow grease  ;)

I must admit, working on cars usually causes me unlimited grief, but so far the headgasket strip down has gone very smootly (touch wood). I think cleaning out the passenger rain drainage pipe caused me more grief than this lol

Today is much more successful - my reference platform for this site is now nearly working, my other Redhat server at home has now learnt how to tell the time, the lawnmower started today without me having to kick it, and my wireless bridge is now working as it should.

I may even buy a lottery ticket.... ;)

My lawnmower refused to start on Sat.....not enuf petrol in it.....so put it back in the shed....that saved one job  ;) .....
Then on Sun my internet connection wouldnt work....tried usual fault finding stuff...i use a adsl modem with 4 lan ports, one of which is connected to a wireless router....both my pc's and printer use wireless connections.....i could connect to the adsl modem from laptop (so my internal network was ok) but modem didnt want to pass diagnostic test....tried turning it off and off several times...no luck.....beginning to think my isp was having probs.

Got out a usb adsl modem and plugged it into laptop and phone line.....sod me the connection was working ok......was now puzzled a bit why the other setup had stopped working.

Went back to original configuration ....still no joy...In a final point of desperation i clicked on the help in the adsl modem where it had failed its diagnostics......it helpfully pointed out to check the phone line connection....duh!!! i can see its plugged in to the phone line where im sitting...so ok i thought i will double check the wired connections......guess what....the help file was correct......the bloody phone line connection had sumhow fallen out the back of the adsl modem...which i couldnt see where i was sitting...just goes to show.....sometimes help files are correct  ;D

Yeap, I know the feeling well!

Can't really imagine being without my collection! The whole Omega/IT Engineer thing seems to work, I know alot of IT peeps, myself included who cruise around in Meegas.

Lol, yeah that sounds about right, though I did MCSE:Security and MCSA:Security a few years back and ever since then things have got slightly better!  Am self-employed now and would never look back.

Hehehe, yeah, you either love them or hate them but it's a way of life.  We do a whole heap of other UNIX based work too but the Windows platform is still, and probably always will be, 'bread and butter' work.

I specialise in network security so it's not as bad as it used to be, tend not to have to deal with too many end users these days which has halved my stress levels from a few years back.  Still, sometimes it's good to have to go back to basics and deal with a complete numpty who can't even figure out how to turn the machine on  ;D

Netware. Reliable. 2 words I thought I'd never here in same sentence  ;D - Netware 5 was just awful, 4 and 3 suffered from bad apps - ARCserve used to abend them almost weekly, 6 and 6.5 are SUSE based.

Couple that to an absolutely awful Windows client...

'Nuf said really...  ;D

Uptimes measured in years was my favourite trick - Netware 5 was really good, that one has got our known customer server uptime record of around 560 days.

Another one (4.2 ) used to get uptimes every year of 330 or so days as it was taken home at Christmas.

We use Advantage Database Server on them - brilliant C/S engine, we use about 3 languages and VB to talk to it.

A site I worked on years ago ran Netware 3.11/2 servers on Compaq Proliant hardware. (Remember them, y'know, the old ones that used to stand on the floor, not the posh rack mounted ones!!)

Anyway, they had one in particular that had been running non stop for somewhere in the region of 3.5 years. The problem was that noone could remember where it was. (This was a huge site with lots of old office blocks and obviously not great on audits!!!.)

As the story goes, they eventually found it whilst having some wiring done in a cupboard behind a stack of shelves under a load of old legers!! Covered in dust but functioning 100%.

LOL, need I say more! hehehe

Though in fairness, we do service some Netware 4 servers which never need rebooting, literally.  I haven't made a point of looking at the uptime but in the 3 years I have been involved with this customer I've never had to restart unless it was scheduled rack maintenance that required removing power.  Servers are accessed with good old Win2k with the Novell client (not the crappy MS one)

I know, I know  :-[ but it was kinda a desperate act.

Windows servers are wonderful!  ;D ......i remember a site i used to work on, the Windows Print server would never go 24hrs before needing a reboot.....and being the 'class' IT dept we were  ::)....a script was written for it so that it rebooted itself during the night  :o Still some days it  needed rebooting every couple of hours.
Eventually we were forced to rebuilt it......use to go for days after that before needing rebooting   ;D

Our own Netware server neeeded a rebuild last year - it started about 10 years ago as a 4.11 server, added more drives, replaced motherboards ect ect - then the original drive broke down - managed to keep the data amd rebuilt as a 6 box.

We also have a 2003 server - that chokes up if we are not careful

Massive uptimes on Netware and Windows servers are a sign of not being maintained properly - both of these systems generally require reboots for patching. Tut tut.

Netware's problem (pre unix kernel) was the apps could easily bring the server down. This is a flaw with the architecture.

Window's problem is that any Tom, Dick or Harry can write apps for it - for a server directly facing the Internet, this can be a problem if the programmer doesn't truely understand the system.  I've seen this many times, once was on a well known website where the business logic was implemented as a VB6 based COM object - fine for small sites, but not ones trying to process several hundred hits per sec. Every time this companies app came on the TV, all their web servers died and needed rebooting.

Ours was SP4 and stayed that way for about 5 years.

We found back up software was the most likely to cause problems.

Despite being SP4, Novell still release regular patches ;)  As do hardware vendors ;)

ARCServe was always a server killer under Netware... ;)

Usually I'd agree, though the servers I refer to are used for digital audio delivery and operate on a very small closed network (sub 5 machines).  Whilst they may well be behind when it comes to patching, the versions which they run are stipulated by the software providers who have tried and tested compatibilty with the servers.  Patching and updating is very goos but in a critical environment, sometimes it's best left alone.  If it 'aint broke don't fix it, especially when the network is isolated and has no contact with the internet or 3rd party intervention via disc etc.
