Thanks for the info.
Its leaking but can't see where from! Not had a proper chance yet, 18 miles to work each way, drinks about a litre-only started leaking on saturday. 'Seems' to leak less with all climate control switched OFF. It does leak when not running though. Also, temp gauge is reading correct but MFD does warn me of low coolant.

Does sound like classic HBV failure...  ...as said in welcome post, change asap before it ruins the DIS...

The four causes are as follows in this order:

1) Heater bypass valve, often not all the time and may only occur when heater is set to full hot or full cold.

2) Thermostat to block seal.....naff original design updated on late power plants with a new stat housing and seal (requries new bolts to).....weeps slowly but can loose quite a bit of water as the coolant stays pressurised for some time after the engine is off, no signs of leak unless valley is inspected due to the water evaporating.

3) Coolant bridge seals....normaly as a result of either the wrong seals being fitted or sume numpty over tightening them (it can crack the casting as well as destrying the rubber /metal seals).....requires inlet off to view.

4) Oil cooler plate to block seal.....rare and again a slow leak which shows no signs due to the coolant evaporating on the hot block, same applies as for the thermostat. Require inlet out to inspect.

Thanks again,
I'm no mechanic but will have a look. I have no manual so if you could point me in the right direction how to check if my leak is the HBV. What covers if any need removing? Location? Does this valve lie behind & between the VEE? I've had a look & tried to trace back the cooling pipes/system but.... ok help!

By the way, I'm in Mid-ish Shropshire & have cash! So if anyone knows a good garage/mechanic/mate who's obviously cheaper than Main Dealer then I'm all ears!

Remove wipers and scuttle, and you should see the little blighter up behind the drivers bank of cylinders. 3 hoses and a small vacuum hose...

Thanks, I'll pull it apart this saturday & have a look.
Car has only covered 47k miles-genuine.
Do I need any specialist tools?
How long do you think this will take?
Anything to avoid?
I believe the part is £26 ish, Main Dealer I assume?
Is the HBV a replacement unit, ie; do I need any gaskets/seals/o-rings as well?
Sorry to be a pain for asking.

I've been surfing the net for 15 years plus & this is the most useful/time saving/money saving/informative site I've seen for ages.

Scuttle cover is easy to remove.....remove the wipers (pop the little plastic covers off and emove the 13mm nut).

Then ease the bottom windscreen seal up slightly and you will see some allen headed inserts (can also be turned with a flat blade screwdriver), turn all of these by 90 deg.

Remove the torx headed screw on the drivers side end of the scuttle cover and lift the cover out.

Look down the back of the enge on the drivers side, you shoudl see some water hoses going to a round palstic object witha  samll vac hose sticking out the top, this is the bypass valve.

No seals etc required for replacement as the hose clips can be re-used.

Need to remove rubber strip that runs along front of scuttle - just pulls off (sometimes bonnet cable attached to scuttle, just unclip).

The original clips are a little fiddly, esp as its a bit cramped in there, might be worth replacing with jubilee clips?
