Mobile phone?
« on: 08 October 2006, 12:34:21 »

Im looking at getting another mobile and like the XDA mini on O2
I did like the XDA Exec to start with, until I saw how big they are  :o

My reasons for liking the XDA mini are, bluetooth, touchscreen, wifi.

My current phone is on a 500mins and 100 texts bundle/month.....i dont use the minutes or the texts, so could go down a tariff.

Anyone know who's doing the best deal on this phone at the mo?

An O2 shop i wandered into recently would give the phone free and then £35/month contract.....anybody seen better??

Cheers

I have the XDA IIs, you cant get it no more tho on contract...

Only issues I have with it, is the way the speaker driver dies, so needing a reboot, same with the bluetooth driver AND the memory leak issues...

O2 Mini runs WM2005 doesnt it??  I did flash my IIs to 2k5 at one point, but as its not designed for it, it ran a little slow!  Although the interface was pwitty!

Watch out too, duno if the problem is still the same, but if you use an SD card in the IIs, the battery drain is immense!

Oh, and DONT let it install the O2 UI Interface, I think the code is 0506 for doing the initial corporate setup, but check on http://www.xda-developers.com to confirm!

 okkkk...

Problems with IIs (which may be on the Mini, dont know...)

Speaker stops working - they hear you, you cant hear them...
Bluetooth stops working - driver crashes at times (memory leak issue)
Battery life goes proper shit if you keep a memory card inserted all the time
O2 User Interface which they install by default is crap - get the method to not install it

Any other problems or whatever, http://www.xda-developers.com

Summary - Good phone, plenty of features, trick!  But has badpoints, and its NOT for the faint hearted...

I dont know if the mini's have those problems either  :-/

Yes im pretty sure they run 2005.

Been having a surf and cheapest deal ive seen is £23.33/month  on a cashback deal, package is 12month contract 02 500.
But i need to call them as they seem to be offering a price plan 02 dont do.... :-/ .....unless its off peak minutes which i dont want! I make the majority of my calls during the day

Most Windows based phones can sometimes be described as 'challenging' at times. Whilst the OS itself has improved, the manufacturer's implementations usually leave much to be desired.  I can get the HP ones cheapish without contract, but they are more PDAs with built in phone, rather than other way round...

You want a nice Sony Ericsson......helps keep my bonus payment up!

Note to The Boy.....Sony have no involvement with the design or manufacture of these unts...its all Ericsson!

In fact I bet you didn't know that Ericsson are the main manufacturer and supplier of the mobile chipsets....just about everybody uses them with the exception of Nokia!

It still says Sony, and those cheating, lying arseholes would get some proportion of my money - thats never gonna happen  >:(

Had a very early GSM Ericsson, it was awful. Not entirely phone's fault, as the GSM networks were not up to TACS then.  If it wasn't for the sony name on it, I would happily try another Ericsson.  I stay away from Motorola phones, as the carkits are suspect - Nokia still do best carkits, Ericsson second best imho.

Well i am bias!!!

I work for one of the major networks......but i would never go for a phone then go for the network/tariff.

For me the most important thing is the tariff/network reliability then i would match a phone on that network.

Does that make sense or does that sound like an ops manager for a sales contact centre about to plug his network  :) :)

Considor what you want from a phone and what you do on it, i guarantee i will find you the best deal on my network.

Now does that sound like a sales pitch  :) :) :D
so TD do you need a mini computer or a phone ??

ps i work for the fastet growing uk network, and the company that SOLD orange cos we got bored with them!!!!!

Agreed with Markiec - pick network first.

Seeing as only O2 works in my house, that doesn't leave any options :(

BTW, my O2, £10 per month for 500mins cross network anytime....

Markiec,
I have no use for 3G, so no desire to move.

Oddly enough, Mrs TheBoy's brother had a Three phone last year, and he stayed with us for a few weeks last year but couldn't get a signal. Probably a firmware fault in phone not going back to GSM?? He always said signal was a real problem, except around M40...

The contract on Mrs TheBoy's is up soon. If you can guarantee that handset does flick back to O2, what can you offer?

I'd be after at least 300mins anytime/network, and a handful of texts. And keep same number. Feel free to PM?
