Injector leak off pipes
« on: 26 November 2011, 22:51:17 »

Hello everyone, today was a bad day!
Once again I found myself depositing hard earned gasoil on the roads between Dundee and Edinburgh, as well as coating the underneath and backside of my trusty shiny 2.5 TD estate (ruined another wiper blade!)

I have used the magnificent search engine and seen that this is quite common feature, so, has anyone come up with solution to keep these little braided buggers in place?

I have been thinking about using small ty-wraps to ensure they are secure, but the problem with that is they do perish with age, then you are left with a mighty difficult tiny part to remove in situ.......
Has any research been carried out to see what alternatives there are to these braided rubber hoses or is it just a case of leave the plastic cover off and carry a load of spare pipe. Personally I would prefer to spend the same amount as I dumped on the roads for a better product to ensure it doesn't happen again (That's the third time it's happened since I bough the car back in April and I reckon I must have shed close to 60 litres) So what else is there or shall I start looking myself.... I would prefer the benefit of someone elses experience in this though.

Muchas gracias

Jon

I heard that Peugeot/Citroen use the best quality pipes, most others are rubbish. There is not a lot of room for Tie-wraps, but I agree there should be some kind of clips.

It's not the make off pipes at fault it's the little cap on number 6 I had the same problem it kept falling off.
The solution was a tent peg jammed down a spare bit of leak off pipe and this replaced the cap (it worked);D :y

Yes, #6  :D I ended up using a full size pipe from the kit and folding it over, secured with a tywrap.

I have been reading up on this problem and it is not limited to our engines or even the BMW 2.5, there's a shed load of oil burners that have this problem. Some of the owners have reported back with various fixes and it appears the best method is nylon pipe 4mm id as it does not kink when bent (well within reasonable bend radius) and to fix in place, heat up carefully with a blow torch or chefs torch until soft, place where needed and when it cools it will shrink and harden in place. One guy with a Re*$%lt reported this method worked for him and has been in place for a couple of years whereas before he was having to replace some of the rubber braided jobs every 1000 miles (which is what I've been experiencing).
I shall have a look around our local DIY shops today I think.

I have had the same problem with #6 keeps on blowing off. Never did it before I had the injectors done. went back 4 times to get it re done, in the end, he gave me a handful of the blanks as spares. Used them all up and got replacements from a very reputable diesel injection specialist. not had any prob for 4 months now (fingers crossed!!!!!) Keith B

Maybe just cheapo crappy generic parts then. I replaced the leak off pipes & the blank on my Astra. It only took a few months before the blank softened & started to leak diesel. A new blank from Vauxhall lasted a further few yews till the car was scrapped.  :y

Interesting as there should not be to much diesela dn not to much pressure in the leak off pipes.

If it gets worse after an injector re-furb I would be worried!

The point about them blowing off is that they shouldn't! Hardly any pressure from that port on the injector, maybe a few psi at the most......?
I know nothing about that side of it but to me even a 'cheapo' replacement should stay in place with virtually no pressure.
Does anyone have the specs for the return pressure, please forgive my ignorance but does it rise and fall with the amount of throttle/overrun or is it a constant?

Doing some more research in t'internet has revealed that a lot of oil burner owners have gone down the nylon pipe route, small heat to soften, fit and cool down to 'shrink' on tight.

I seem to remember back a few years that another oil burner did have steel return pipes that had a small union attachment rather than a push fit. I guess the injector manufacturer decided it would be more economical to build them with the push fit eh?

Still looking for nylon pipe as we chat.

That one on #6 is a real pig to get to as well. I wonder if where I went had inferior blanks as the whole job was a nightmare, they broke the car twice while they had it in. First bit I found was the vac pipe that runs from the servo down to the EGR. It has two smaller pipes that run off of it by #4 injector. They broke off the one that must go to the gearbox ecu as I could be out dragged from the lights by a fully loaded artic. Then I found that they had also broken both the sensor wires that come off #4 injector. The whole job was £350 but it cost him £280 to buy a new injector from bosch. I told them that if they identified what type of engine it was, a new injector from Vauxhall was only £85 on trade club. They decided to ignore my advice. Ha ha ha
